Susan Williams Antonia Stockard Wiki Biography

Born Susan Antonia Williams Stockard on the 13th February 1944 in New York City, USA, Susan is an actress, best known to the world as Abbey Bartlet in “The West Wing” (1999-2006), Rizzo in “Grease” (1978), and Aunt Frances in “Practical Magic” (1998) among other roles. Her career has been active since 1969.

Have you ever wondered how rich Stockard Channing is as of mid-2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Stockard Channing’s net worth as high as $5 million, an amount earned through her successful acting career. Apart from appearing on screen, Susan is also well known in theaters, receiving a Tony Award in the category Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

Susan Stockard and her sister were the daughters of Lester Napier Stockard and Mary Alice Stockard. She went to a boarding school for girls, The Madeira School in Virginia and studied History and Literature at Radcliffe College, from which she graduated in 1965.Stockard`s career began in the late 1960s, when she joined the experimental Theatre Company of Boston, appearing in the group`s off-Broadway production of the play “Adaptation/Next” (1969), written by Elaine May. Little by little Stockard progressed, and made her Broadway debut in “Two Gentlemen of Verona — The Musical” (1971). She then started her career on screen, but stayed active on stage too, appearing in numerous plays, including “They’re Playing Our Song” (1980), “The House of Blue Leaves” (1986-1987), “Six Degrees of Separation” (1990-1992), “Other Desert Cities” (2011-2012), and “It`s Only a Play” (2014-2015), among others, all of which added a substantial amount to her net worth.

Stockard made her screen debut in 1972 in the kid`s show “Sesame Street”, as Mad Painter`s Victim, and a year later she appeared in the television film “The Girl Most Likely to…” (1973), as Miriam Knight. Throughout the 1970s she had lead roles in such productions as “The Fortune” (1975) with Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty, “Sweet Revenge” (1976), “The Big Bus” (1976), and “Grease” (1978), next to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. In 1980 she was given her own show “The Stockard Channing Show”, in which she acted as Susan Goodenow, but it was cancelled after 13 episodes. In the 1980s her popularity began to decline, and roles in such flops as “Safari 3000” (1982), which also featured David Carradine and Christopher Lee, “Not My Kid” (1985), “The Men`s Club” (1986), and “A Time of Destiny” (1988), only quickened the decline of her career.

However, in 1993 her fame returned when she starred as Ouisa in Fred Schepisi` “Six Degrees of Separation”, alongside Donald Sutherland and Will Smith, and she continued successfully through the 1990s with roles in “Smoke” (1995), “Edie & Pen” (1996), “An Unexpected Family” (1996), and “Practical Magic” (1998), among others, all of which added to her net worth. Before the 1990s, ended she was selected for the role of Abbey Bartlet in “The West Wing” (1999-2006), increasing further her net worth, and also boosting her popularity, thanks to the success of the series.

Channing started the 2000s quite successfully with a role in “The Truth About Jane” (2000), and then continuing to “The Business of Strangers” (2001). In 2002 she starred in “The Matthew Shepard Story”, alongside Shane Meier and Wendy Crewson, and in 2005 she portrayed Dr. Lydia Barnes in “Out of Practise” (2005-2006). She didn’t have any major roles until 2010, then appearing in “Sundays at Tiffany`s” starring Alyssa Milano. In 2011 she featured in “17th Precinct”, and from 2012 until 2016 she appeared as Veronica Loy in 12 episodes of the TV series “The Good Wife”, starring Julianna Margulies and Christine Baranski among others. She will appear in the film “Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon”, which is in post-production in 2016.

Thanks to her skills, Stockar received numerous prestigious awards, including two Primetime Emmy Awards in categories Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for the film “The Matthew Shepard Story”, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the TV series “The West Wing”. Furthermore, she also won two SAG Awards for “The Matthew Shepard Story” and “The West Wing”. She also received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Six Degrees of Separation”, among many other awards.

Regarding her personal life, Stockard has four divorces behind her, but no children from any of the marriages; her first husband was Walter Channing(1963-67), after which she kept his last name, Stockard Channing. Her second husband was Paul Schmidt(1970-76), and the same year she married David Debin, but the couple divorced in 1980. Her fourth husband was David Rawle; they married 1980 and divorced 1988. Nowadays, she lives with Daniel Gillham, and they have been together for more than 20 years.

She had problems with the law in 2005; she was given 36 months probation, after pleading no contest on driving under the influence charges.

Susan Williams Antonia Stockard Quotes

  • It’s funny, I had dinner with my dear friend John Spencer last night and I’m not in the first episode, but he’s at the beginning of it and he was telling me about it and I thought this sounds very hot because I think this is definitely the last year of West Wing.
  • These things have a life of there own and never existed when I was growing up certainly worrying when one would get made. It’s kind of amazing how that one movie kept living through all these years.
  • You’re talking to someone who has been married to various people for the last 40 years of her life. Dating is not really something familiar. I’ve never really been a dater.
  • When I was younger I thought I was an artist, and inspiration would just come to me.
  • You don’t want to play a character you can’t inhabit or commit to fully.
  • I couldn’t do it at all. I was never really good at it, but I can’t imagine what it can be like as a fortunate person not having to deal with it. I mean, people of all ages, not just my age, 25, 35, all the way down the line.
  • I think that’s the phenomenon of our time is that a lot of women keep themselves in good shape but that there’s not a lot of accommodation or people out there to connect with and the technology.
  • It would be interesting if this sitcom works, so I could be doing one thing all the time instead of going back and forth between all this different media which I sort of thrive on, I’m a bit of a moving target in that way.
  • I want to go working with good people on something that’s good, because otherwise it’s a big waste of time. I don’t have that much time.
  • I’m kind of spoiled, but the great thing about life is that you never know what’s around the corner.
  • I’m rather uncomfortable with celebrity, to be honest.
  • Oh, my only – if I had one frustration in being on ‘West Wing’ is I wasn’t on it enough, because I was in and out.
  • Well, I mean she’s of a certain biological age but she didn’t have to go around with fat patches and stuff.
  • I think the end of last year when we were aware of that transition was for everyone in their own way kind of bittersweet, but it’s also what the show’s about, one administration ends and another begins.
  • Casting can be heartbreaking. Dealing with the disappointment is the hardest part.
  • Acting is such a bizarre way of life. Unless you’re really passionate about it, you should give it up. Don’t beat yourself up.
  • I hate parties. I really don’t like public events. I hate dressing up. I am the worst celebrity ever!
  • I lead a very boring, normal life.
