Dawson matriculated in 1993 and then enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he tied the school record of 54 consecutive extra points made.

Although he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2010 season, the Browns cut the franchise tag on him, and kept him until 2012. He was selected to his first ever Pro Bowl game that year, while he also made it to the Second-team All-Pro.
