Martha Wash Wiki Biography

Martha Wash was born on the 28 December 1953 in San Francisco, CaliforniaUSA, and is an R&B, pop and house singer best known as one half of the duo The Weather Girls, with Izora Rhodes, releasing six albums before their disbandment in the late ‘80s. Martha’s career started in the late ‘70s.

Have you ever wondered how rich Martha Wash is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Wash’s net worth is as high as $4 million, an amount earned through her successful career in the entertainment industry as a musician. Aside from being a part of the iconic dance duo, Martha has also had success on her own, which also improved her wealth too.

Martha’s career started in the ‘70s when she sang in the gospel group NOW (News of the World), alongside Izora Rhodes. The two then joined disco musician Sylvester, but soon decided to venture out on their own, and started a group called Two Tons of Fun. Their first self-titled studio album came in 1980, and released one more album “Backatcha”, before changing their name to Weather Girls in 1982. With the name change came their most prominent hit single – “It’s Raining Men” – which reached No. 2 in the UK chart and topped the charts in Australia and Europe, while also reaching No. 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. They existed until 1988, releasing such albums as “Success” (1983), “Big Girls Don’t Cry” (1985), and “Weather Girls” (1988). Izora later reformed the group with her daughter, but Martha stayed out of picture.

Instead, Martha focused on a solo career, and so far has released three studio albums, including “Martha Wash” in 1993 which reached No. 8 on the Top Heatseekers, and “Something Good” (2013), the sales of which also increased her wealth. Most recently, she joined with disco vocalists Evelyn “Champagne” King and Linda Clifford on the song “Show Some Love”.

Martha has made several notable live performances, and has covered songs of other musicians too, including “I’m Still Standing” originally performed by Elton John, and “Mr. Big Stuff” by Jean Knights.

Martha’s net worth also increased from her public appearances, including at Big Gay Day in Brisbane, Australia on 9 March 2008, and the same year she also performed at Chicago Gay Pride Street Fest. In 2009 she sang at the Opening Ceremony of the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series in Milwaukee, and later, in the summer 2014 she sang at the World Pride in Toronto, Canada, among many other notable appearances.

Regarding her personal life, Martha has never married and she has no children; there are rumours concerning her sexuality..

Back in the ‘90s, when Weather Girls disbanded she sued Black Box label RCA, because most of her contributions to Weather Girls were uncredited. The charge was settled outside the court, with Martha receiving payment and a recording contract with RCA, which she used well to release her debut solo album “Martha Wash”.

Martha Wash Important Facts

  • Her Weather Girls song “It’s Raining Men” was ranked #35 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Dance Songs while her controversial vocal lending to C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” landed on #9.
  • She was in the midst of a big scandal in the early ’90s, as she claimed that the C&C Music Factory didn’t credit her for vocals on their #1 hit “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” It was Wash’s rich, shattering voice that turned “Everybody Everybody” into a smash for Black Box, but she wasn’t featured in the video. Wash, who is overweight, was invariably replaced in the songs and videos by lip-syncing models, and was forced to resort to legal action to get a proper share of the royalties for her work.
