David is of part Croatian and part German descent; in his early years, he and his family would often visit Croatian clubs and churches, teaching young David about his roots. As he grew older, David continued that practice, and after he moved to New Jersey he became an integral part of the Croatian community. He went to Brother Rice High School, where he also excelled in track, football and wrestling. However, David matriculated from St. Linus Grammar school, located in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

David then enrolled at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he focused solely on football, playing as left offensive guard during a quite successful college career, earning Wright Commitment to Excellence Award, and was selected into the second-team All-Big Ten Conference as a senior.

In 2003, David declared for the NFL Draft, and was selected as the 160th overall pick by the New York Giants – he spent his entire career wearing the Giants jersey. In his rookie season, David started all 16 games of the season, which hadn’t occurred in Giants franchise since 1985 when Marko Bavaro started all 16 games for the Giants. Although he played all games, his stats number weren’t extraordinary, nevertheless, until 2009, David held his starting position firmly, and in 2007 helped the Giants win the Super Bowl ring, by defeating the New England Patriots by 17-14. Thanks to his performances, David appeared in the 2009 Pro Bowl, and then with the Giants when they again defeated the Patriots, this time 21-1in Super Bowl 2011.
