Have you ever wondered how rich Maurício Rua is, as of late 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Rua’s net worth is as high as $6.5 million, earned through his successful career as a professional MMA fighter, active since 2002.
The middle child of a businessman father and a mother who is a former track athlete and a marathon runner, his brothers, Murilo and Marcos are also mixed martial artists, however, the latter hasn’t competed at a professional level. From an early age, Maurício was introduced to martial arts as he was signed up for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he was only six years old, and just a year later joined a Muay Thai club. Maurício steadily improved, and as he got older he expanded his skills to boxing and wrestling as well.
He entered professional waters through vale tudo events across Brazil, and was rather successful, defeating such fighters as Evangelista Santos, among others. He was also a competitor at the International Fighting Championship’s Global Domination Tournament. After winning his opening fight, he lost in the second fight of the tournament.
Following the end of his stint at the tournament, Maurício joined the PRIDE Organization, and in 2005 became PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix Champion, after he defeated Ricardo Arona in the finals of the tournament. His PRIDE career ended in 2007 with a victory over Alistair Overeem at PRIDE 33, to compile a record of 16-2.
After leaving PRIDE, Maurício became a part of the UFC, and debuted at UFC 76; unfortunately, he lost his first bought to Forrest Griffin. He then underwent knee surgery which kept him out of fighting for the whole of 2008, but then re-injured the knee and had again to go under the knife. He returned to the UFC in 2009 and fought against Mark Coleman, his first victory in the UFC and also his first Fight of the Night, for which he received a $40,000 bonus, which certainly increased his net worth. Although Rua won the match, he was highly disrespected by the fans, since his opponent was a veteran, 44 years old and without a fight in the last two years. However, he drew sympathy after his next fight, in which he defeated Chuck Liddell by KO in the first round.
He won the Knockout of the Night honors, and a money bonus that goes with it, which again increased his net worth.
He next fought Lyoto Machida for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, but lost the fight, however, in a second try he was successful on the 8th May 2010 at UFC 113 and by KO in the first round, and in addition received Knockout of the Night honors once again.
Unfortunately, Rua lost his title in the first match in which he was a defender, against Jon Jones on the 19th March 2011 at the UFC 128 in the third round.
Since then, Maurício has fought a number of times, including against Dan Henderson which was named Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year, which Rua unfortunately lost, then against Brandon Vera, against whom he was rather successful, and against Antônio Rogério Nogueira, which was his 23rd win as a professional. He has now compiled a total record of 25 wins and 10 lost matches, and an impressive net worth.
Regarding his personal life, Maurício has been married to Renata Ribeiro since 2007; the couple has a daughter, born in 2010.
During one of his interviews, Maurício stated that he won’t fight against his own brother, Murilo, or Wanderlei Silva, because of their personal relationships.
