William Wendell Gilman III Wiki Biography
William Wendell Gilman III is a singer born on 24th May 1988, in Westerly, Rhode Island USA, and is perhaps best known for his debut single – “One Voice”, and also for appearing in the 11th season of the TV singing competition “The Voice” in 2016, finishing as runner-up.
Have you ever wondered how rich Billy Gilman is, as of early 2017? According to sources, it has been estimated that Billy Gilman’s overall net worth is $4 million, acquired by building a notable music career from the early 2000s until now. His appearances on TV shows additionally increased his popularity and net worth. Since he is still active in the entertainment industry, his net worth continues to grow.
Billy was raised in Hope Valley, Rhode Island; he began singing while still in school, and made his first public performance when he was only seven years old. Two years later, he was noticed by Ray Benson who then helped him record his first demos. In 2000, Gilman signed to Epic Records and released his debut single “One Voice”, which became an instant hit and reached the Billboard Hot 100 at no.38 and Billboard Hot Country Songs, where it was among the top 20. This made him the youngest artist ever to have a Top 40 single on the country chart, and for which Billy was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. His first album – of the same name – came out in June 2000 and was certified double platinum in the US; apart from the title track “One Voice”, it included singles such as “There’s a Hero” and “Oklahoma”, which also entered the top charts. His net worth was already established.
Following his first success, Gilman released a Christmas album called “Classic Christmas”, and his second album “Dare to Dream”(2001), which both went gold, although its singles didn’t achieve as much success as the previous. Unusually, after the release of his second album, Billy temporarily withdrew from singing due to the notable change of his voice as he was entering puberty. He released his next album in April 2003 called “Music Through Hearsongs: Songs Based on the Poems of Mattie J.T.Stepanek”, which contained songs based on the poems written by a child poet with muscular dystrophy who died a year later. In 2005, he signed to Image Entertainment and released album “Everything and More”, followed by his sixth album “Billy Gilman” in 2006.
After a long, unexplained break, Gilman appeared in public in 2016 as a contestant on NBC’s reality television singing competition “The Voice” and managed to reach the finals.
When it comes to his private life, in November 2014 Billy released a video entitled “My Story by Billy Gilman”, in which he came out as gay. The same year, he announced his relationship with Chris Meyer. He is a celebrity ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

William Wendell Gilman III Quotes
- I had no idea what the music industry was about.
- I was doing so much – 90 plus concerts a year, television appearances, recording in the studio, and tons of interviews. I was in constant motion and because of my voice change, I went from doing all of that to doing absolutely nothing at all. It wasn’t as if I made the decision to leave my music career to go back to being ‘normal.’ Being in music and singing is ‘normal’ for me. I’ve been singing since I was two years old. It was my life and this was pretty traumatizing for me.”
- I honestly did not think I would record again. But by the grace of God and thanks to all of those who had patience, faith and confidence in me, I was able to overcome some personal insecurities – which are really quite normal for a kid my age!
- My immediate thought was ‘why so soon?’ I was just learning how to use my voice, getting it all down and feeling comfortable with my career – being in the spotlight – and doing what I needed to do. I went to Vanderbilt Voice Clinic in Nashville – one of the world’s best voice centers and they told me ‘no singing, no talking.’ They may have well have just said, ‘stop breathing.’ ” With the voice change – a life change – came the fear that he may never sing again.
- I look back now over those two years and I’m grateful for the time and wisdom I gained. It was a good time to rest, re-group, think of the future and make a decision as to my long term commitments. Just as most kids at my age are getting their lives started, I was forced to face a possible career change! Being on vocal rest gave me the time to search my heart and my priorities and make a full commitment to my music and getting back to it.”
- I think ‘Everything and More’ is a more mature version of ‘One Voice.’ The music is fun and includes all aspects of the country genre (including bluegrass, pop, country rock, and traditional ballads) and every song is about a new aspect in my life. One song is about the trying times that I went through with my voice change and my fear that I may never sing again. Another song, ‘I’m Not Me Anymore,’ is about how I’ve grown and changed – it’s my favorite. This time, I had a say in what I wanted to record and I’m so proud of this project because it’s a reflection of who I am today as a young adult. I think the lyrics of each and every song create a picture – just as if you were at the movies. I really hope everyone enjoys my personal ‘photo’ album!
