Udonis Johneal Haslem was born on 9 June 1980, in Miami Florida USA, of Puerto Rican descent. He is a professional basketball player, best known as a power forward for the Miami Heat of the NBA.

He attended Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, and Miami Senior High School joining the basketball team under the coach Frank Martin, and leading the team to the state championships in 1997 and 1998. However, due to Haslem and several other players violating residency requirements, the team was unable to take the 1998 championship title.

He later enrolled at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, majoring in leisure service management and joining the Florida Gators basketball team under the coach Billy Donovan. As the starting center for the Gators, Haslem helped the team to the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship game in his sophomore year, and was part of four Florida Gators NCAA tournament teams. In 2002 Haslem was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA, however, as he gained too much weight, the team dismissed him, which resulted in his signing with the French professional team Chalon-Sur-Saône.
