Thomas Charles Werner Wiki Biography
Thomas Charles Werner was born on the 12th April 1950, in New York City, USA, and is a television personality and businessman, best known to the world as the Chairman of the Fenway Sports Group, through which he chairs the Boston Red Sox baseball team, and English Premier League soccer side Liverpool.
Have you ever wondered how rich Tom Werner is, as of mid-2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Tom Werner`s net worth is as high as $300 million, an amount he has acquired through his successful careers; he has been working for the ABC Network since the early 1970s, and has overseen the development of several popular sitcoms, including “Taxi”, (1978-1982), “Mork And Mindy” (1978-1982), and “Soap” (1977-1981), among others.
Tom was raised in a Jewish family alongside his two siblings, sister Patsy and brother Peter, who became famous filmmakers. Tom attended St. Bernard’s School in Manhattan, and then moved to The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. Following his high school matriculation, he enrolled at Harvard University, from which he graduated with a degree in English language.
His career began as early as 1973, when he was hired by ABC-TV; after two years of hard work, Tom was promoted to the position of the Director of East Coast Prime Time Development. Four years later he forwarded to a position of senior vice president of the prime-time development department. While at ABC, Tom was responsible for the successful launch of the series’ “Soap”, “Mork And Mindy”, and “Taxi”, which helped kick-start the careers of such actors as Robin Williams, Tom Hanks and Danny DeVito, among others. His net worth was well established.
After that, he teamed up with Marcy Carsey to start The Carsey-Werner Company, through which the two produced over 50 TV series. During the 1980s, they were responsible for series such as “The Cosby Show” (1984-1992), “A Different World” (1987-1993), starring Kadeem Hardison, and “Roseanne” (1987-1997) with Roseanne Barr in the lead role, among others, all of which added a lot to Tom`s net worth. The two continued successfully through the 1990s, launching such series as “Grace Under Fire” (1993-1998), “Cybill” (1995-1998) starring Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski, “3rd Rock from the Sun” (1996-2001) with John Lithgow and Kristen Johnson among other actors, and “That `70s Show” (1998-2002), which launched the careers of actors Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.
Nothing changed for the two in the 2000s, as they continued to produce successful television series, including “Grounded for Life” (2001-2005), “The Life & Times of Tim” (2008-2012), and most recently “Survivor’s Remorse” (2015), among others, all of which increased Tom`s net worth by a large margin.
Thanks for his career in television, Tom has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award in category Outstanding Comedy Series for his work on “The Cosby Show”. Furthermore, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Television given by the Producers Guild of America, and has also been inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame.
After he earned enough from television, Tom teamed up with 14 other Southern California-based investors, and bought the San Diego Padres baseball team for $75 million in 1990. He owned the majority of the club, and served as its managing director until 1994 when he sold 80% of his shares to John Moores for $80 million, which only further increased his net worth. 13 years later, he sold the rest of the team to Moores.
In the meantime, he co-founded the Fenway Sports Group with Larry Lucchino and John W. Henry, and bought another MLB club, the Boston Red Sox, since when he has been the chairman of the club. Furthermore, Tom and the Fenway Sports Group bought Liverpool F.C in 2010 for $400 million.
Regarding his personal life, Tom has three children from his marriage with Jill Troy(1972-2003). Tom has also been recognized as philanthropist, starting the Red Sox Foundation, through which he has donated over $80 million to numerous other charity organizations. He has also launched the Home Base Program in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on treating war veterans. Thanks to his actions, he has received several awards and accolades, including the Dave Winfield Humanitarian Award from the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation, and also Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence, among others.
