Terence Richard McAuliffe was born on the 9th February 1957, in Syracuse, New York State USA, and is a politician and businessman, probably best known as the 72nd Governor of Virginia, and also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee (2001-2005), co-chairman of President Bill Clinton’s 1996 re-election campaign, and chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. McAuliffe’s career started in 1971.

Terry McAuliffe was born into an Irish-American family, a son of Mildred Katherine Lonergan and Jack McAuliffe, real estate agent and local Democratic politician. Terry grew up in New York, and went to the Bishop Ludden Junior/Senior High School, from where he matriculated in 1975 and then graduated with a bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America in 1979. Soon after, McAuliffe began working on President Jimmy Carter’s re-election campaign, and at age 22 he became the national finance director. After that, Terry enrolled at the Georgetown University Law Center and earned his Juris doctor degree in 1984.
However, Terry had started his own business in 1971 – McAuliffe Driveway Maintenance – at just 14 years old, and as quoted from The Washington Post – ‘…later became a millionaire thanks to his endeavours and investments in banking, real estate, home building, and as a hotel owner and internet venture capitalist.’ In 1985, Terry co-founded the Washington D.C.-based Federal City National Bank, and three years later, he was appointed as a new chairman, becoming the youngest chairman in the United States Federal Reserve Bank at 30 years of age. In 1991, the bank merged with the Credit International Bank, while in 1997, McAuliffe invested in a Bermuda-registered telecommunications company called Global Crossing, with $100,000; a year after the company went public, then in 1999 Terry sold the majority of his holdings for $8.1 million, a smart addition to is net worth.
McAuliffe’s other business adventures include establishing the holding company called GreenTech Automotive in 2009, but in 2013, he decided to resign from GreenTech to concentrate on his run for governor of Virginia. Terry is a member of a Democratic Party and served as Democratic National Committee Chairman from 2001 to 2005. Subsequently he was elected the 72nd Governor of Virginia in January 2014, beating Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Libertarian Robert Sarvis for the post. Since 16th July 2016, Terry succeeded Gary Herbert as the new Chair of the National Governors Association.
Terry published his memoir “What a Party! My Life Among Democrats: Presidents, Candidates, Donors, Activists, Alligators, and Other Wild Animals” in 2007, which made it to the New York Times Best Seller List.
Regarding his personal life, Terry McAuliffe married Dorothy Swann – a daughter of one of his business partners – in 1988 and they have five children. McAuliffe’s family currently live in McLean, Virginia.
