Pendergrass was earning his salary while playing for some bands, but finally he became the drummer of the rock and roll band The Cadillacs. In 1970 he joined the band Blue Notes as a drummer but later Harold Melvin, the founder of the band, got impressed by Teddies vocal and so he was made the lead singer. This was profitable for the band and Pendergrass especially when they signed the contracts with Philadelphia International Records.
