Syleena Johnson, nee Thompson, was born on September 2, 1976 in Harvey, Illinois United States. She is the daughter of 1960s R&B singer Syl Johnson and Brenda Thompson, who was America’s first black female poilice commissioner. Syleena has been active in her career since 1997, and is perhaps best known for her soul, even soulful, music on the eight studio albums that she has released, including Love Hangover (1999), Chapter 3: The Flesh (2005), Chapter 5: The Underrated (2011), and Chapter 6: Couples Therapy (2013 – 2014).

Syleena Johnson’s`s musical father encouraged his daughter to also became involved in the music industry. In her childhood, Johnson was a fan of Al Green, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner as well, but it was in high school – Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois – where Syleena became keen on soul genre music, although singing in the school`s choir focused her attention on the gospel genre as well.
