Have you ever wondered how rich Sarah McLachlan is, as of mid- 2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Sarah McLachlan’s net worth is as high as $45 million, an amount earned through her successful music career. In addition to being a highly-rated singer, McLachlan also worked as an executive producer, and painter which have improved her wealth.
Sarah Ann McLachlan grew up in Halifax in a family that adopted her when she was a baby. She took piano, guitar, and voice lessons as a child, and later went to the Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax where she sang in the rock band called The October Game. Following the band’s first concert, McLachlan was offered a move to Vancouver to join the Nettwerk record label, but being only 17, her parents wanted her to stay for the next two years to finish high school and study for a year at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
In 1988, Sarah moved to Vancouver and signed a contract with Nettwerk without having a single song written before. Her debut album “Touch” (1988) received both commercial and critical success, with Sarah singing and playing 12-string and classical guitars, piano, and keyboards. The single “Vox” was the most popular song of the album, however, her next album was the breakthrough for McLachlan; the “Solace” (1991) went two times platinum for over 200,000 sales in Canada, and gold in the US selling more than 500,000 copies. It also peaked at the No. 167 on the US Billboard 200 chart and No. 21 on Canadian Albums Chart. On this album, McLachlan worked with Pierre Marchand, and they would collaborate ever since.
Marchand produced her third album, “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” in 1993, which was an absolute hit; it went 5x platinum in Canada and 3x platinum in the USA with over three million copies sold, while reaching No. 50 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Canadian Albums Chart, and having relative success internationally as well. However, McLachlan’s best-known and best-selling album came out in 1997 called “Surface”; it earned her two Grammy Awards and significantly increased her net worth, effectively making her a multi-millionaire. The album peaked the No. 2 on the US Billboard 200, No. 1 on the Canadian RPM 100 Albums, and No. 47 on the UK Albums Chart. The singles “Building a Mystery”, “Sweet Surrender”, “Adia”, and “Angel” all made it to the top of the charts too.
Following a six-year break, Sarah returned with an album called “Afterglow” in 2003, and sold over four million copies worldwide, getting the 2x platinum in the USA, 5x platinum in Canada, and gold in the UK and Australia. The album reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200, No. 1 on Canadian Albums Chart, and on No. 33 on UK Albums Chart. McLachlan’s next three albums: “ Wintersong” (2006), “Laws of Illusion” (2010), and “Shine On” (2014) weren’t as popular as the previous ones, but still generated more money to her bank account. Most recently, Sarah released “Classic Christmas Album” in 2015.
Regarding her personal life, Sarah McLachlan married her drummer Ashwin Sood in 1997, and they had two daughters before divorcing in 2008. Sarah is a well-known philanthropist, and raised over $3.5 million for the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia in 2005 with the concert “One World: The Concert for Tsunami Relief”. Sarah has also donated a lot of money for causes such as AIDS sufferers, woman charities, and inner-city kids.

Sarah Ann McLachlan Quotes
- [on having her songs choreographed in ‘Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’] I was a ballet virgin. I think we maybe saw ‘The Nutcracker’ once. And I can’t even begin to dance. I’m two left feet!
- I think sometimes all you need is to hear someone else say the same thing that you’re going through to realize that you’re not alone. I try to put some sense of hope into the songs, into whatever the situation is so that it’s not just dirt, drudgery and a life of misery. You’ve got to try to find a flip-side to everything, the good side.
- I was a pretty insecure kid, didn’t have a lot of friends, and was picked on a lot, and music gave me confidence.
- My guideline for success — and this is really, truthfully honest — is whether I am really proud of this record [Afterglow]. If I am proud of the record, which I am, then I let it go. If other people like it, then that’s a big old bonus for me.
- Time is a beautiful thing. It’s like when you meet an old lover on the street six years later and they don’t look so ugly anymore.
- I don’t worry about much anymore. The good thing about worry is that it’s like pain. When it’s not there, you don’t remember what it feels like.
- We’re constantly being told what other people think we are, and that’s why it is so important to know yourself.
- I’ve learned to trust myself, to listen to truth, to not be afraid of it and to not try and hide it.
- Happiness is like a cloud, if you stare at it long enough, it evaporates.
