Patti Ann LuPone Wiki Biography
Patti Ann LuPone was born on 21 April 1949, in Northport, New York USA, to Angela Louise, a librarian, and Orlando Joseph LuPone, a school administrator, of Italian descent. She is an actress and singer, best known for her work in the musicals “Evita”, “Anything Goes”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Gypsy” and “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”.
So just how rich is Patti LuPone? According to sources, LuPone has established a net worth of over $4 million, as of late 2016, accumulated during her acting and singing career which began in the late ‘60s.
LuPone grew up on Long Island, along with her older twin brothers William and Robert LuPone, the latter becoming an actor, dancer and director. Her great-grand-aunt was the acclaimed opera singer Adelina Patti, after whom LuPone was named. She attended Northport High School, and later the Drama Division of The Juilliard School, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
LuPone expressed interests in music and theater during her high school days, and while attending the Julliard she became a member of The Acting Company and performed in various company productions during the ’70s, making her Broadway debut in the play “The Three Sisters” in 1973. She went on to appear in numerous musicals during the ’70s, including “The Beggar’s Opera”, “The Robber Bridegroom” and “The Baker’s Wife”, and her skillful performances earned her a starring role in the original Broadway production of “Evita” in 1979. LuPone’s portrayal of Eva Peron brought her an astonishing popularity, as well as a Tony Award, and significantly added to her net worth, plus establishing her career in film and television, next appearing in Spielberg’s comedy “1941” in 1979.
Patti went on to perform in off-Broadway musicals during the early ’80s, such as “The Cradle Will Rock” and “Les Miserables”. Meanwhile, she starred as Lisa D’Angelo in the vigilante film “Fighting Back”, and appeared in the films “Witness”, “Cat’s Eye” and “Wise Guys”. In 1987 she returned to Broadway in the starring role of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney in the musical “Anything Goes”, then 1989 saw LuPone in the film “Driving Miss Daisy”, after which she was cast in a starring role on television, playing Libby Thatcher in the ABC family drama “Life Goes On” until the show’s cancellation in 1993.
The same year she appeared in the film “Family Prayers”, and released her debut album, “Patti LuPone Live!”, a collection of her best-known material from various shows she had appeared in. In 1995 she starred in her one-woman show “Patti LuPone on Broadway” and then went on to appear in the Broadway plays “Master Class” and “The Old Neighborhood”. In 1999 she performed a concert act called “Matters of the Heart”, followed by the same-titled album, and appeared in the films “The 24-Hour Woman” and “Summer of Sam”. All added to her wealth.
During the early 2000s, LuPone made several film appearances, such as in “State and Main”, “Heist” and “City by the Sea”, and also had a recurring role in the series “Oz”. She returned to Broadway in 2005 with the role of Mrs. Lovett, a tuba, in the musical “Sweeney Todd”. The following year saw her playing Rose in the musical “Gypsy”, for which she won her second Tony Award; shortly after, she released her album “The Lady with the Torch”. LuPone’s starring role in the opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” in 2007 earned her two Grammy Awards. She received further critical acclaim with the role of Lucia in the musical “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” in 2010.
In the years since, LuPone has tackled a mix of television, film and stage work. Aside from recurring roles in the series “30 Rock”, “American Horror Story: Coven” and “Girls” plus numerous guest appearances, she has appeared in the films “Company” and “Parker”, and in 2011 she appeared in the satirical ballet chanté “The Seven Deadly Sins”.
Most recently, Patti had a recurring role as Dr. Seward in the series “Penny Dreadful” in 2016, and will star as Helena Rubinstein in the musical “War Point”, beginning in 2017.
Her brilliant career has enabled LuPone to earn numerous awards and honors, among them two Grammy and two Tony Awards, and to establish significant wealth. Aside from acting, she has written a memoir, simply entitled “Patti LuPone: A Memoir”.
In her private life, LuPone has been married to the cameraman Mathew Johnston since 1988. The couple has one child together.

Patti Ann LuPone Quotes
- [after snatching a cellphone during a performance] We work hard onstage to create a world that is being totally destroyed by a few rude, self-absorbed and inconsiderate audience members.
- I’m fairly tough on anybody who isn’t there for the play. I’m very tough on people who are in it for the wrong reason. I’m very tough on people who don’t remember that there’s an audience out there paying a lot of money. The bottom line is that I love the theater. I realized when I came back [after an absence in L.A.] and put my foot on the boards, this is where I belong.
- I’m totally Italian, and it’s a big personality. But I’m not a diva. If you could see the way I’m dressed in daily life, that’s not a diva. Appearances are so not important to me.
- For a long time, I don’t think people thought I was capable of comedy. I mean, I’m Italian, so crying has always been easy for me – our emotions are just underneath the skin. But I’ve always had a black sense of humor, and I’ve always been able to find humor in any situation.
- I knew before I knew anything else that my career was in Europe. I wanted a career there. I’ve always thought that was who I am and that what I look like belongs in Italy. I made a film there and I looked around and thought, ‘God, I’m a beauty here. I mean, I’m really gorgeous here.’
- The audiences that inspire me are the ones that are not asleep.
