Nigella Lawson Wiki Biography
London-born on 6 January 1960, and Oxford-educated, the famous British food writer, book reviewer and journalist Nigella Lucy Lawson is one of the world’s best-known food entertainers, owing largely to her television cooking show “Nigella Bites” and subsequent TV productions, as well as her series of cook books – of which the second, “How to be a Domestic Goddess”, won the British Book Award for Author of the Year.
So just how rich is Nigella Lawson? Sources have estimated that Nigella’s net worth is over $15 million, built largely on her successful careers as a broadcaster, television personality, journalist and writer, all of which Lawson has managed to seamlessly integrate together into one impressive bundle of worldwide fame and huge commercial success. Associated businesses also contribute to her considerable wealth – Lawson’s cookware range, “Living Kitchen”, alone exceeds £7 million in value.
Nigella Lawson became familiar with the food industry from an early age – her mother, Vanessa Salmon, was the owner of the hugely successful catering business, “J Lyons and Co”. (Her father was Baron Nigel Lawson, Chancellor in Margaret Thatcher’s government.) Lawson did not have an entirely happy childhood, however – the British journalist and television personality has been quoted claiming she did not get along with her mother, and that it was not until her own adulthood that the two finally patched things up. Nigella Lawson’s parents divorced when she was 20 and studying in the prestigious University of Oxford, from which she graduated with a degree in medieval and modern languages. Much of Lawson’s early career was spent working as a freelance journalist and writer – until she developed the idea to write her very first cook book.
Nigella Lawson herself attributed the idea to write her first cook book, “How to Eat”, to seeing a dinner party host become furious because of an unset crème caramel. Published in 1998, “How to Eat” was a near-instant bestseller and went on to sell 300,000 copies in the UK alone – giving Nigella Lawson’s net worth a massive increase, and setting her firmly on the path to a career in the food industry. Two years later, Lawson published another book, “How to be a Domestic Goddess”, which was likewise received with astounding success – in 2001, Lawson was awarded the title of Author of the Year by the British Book Awards, despite having to compete against authors like world-famous novelist J. K. Rowling. After this, the idea for Lawson to begin her own television series, “Nigella Bites”, came naturally. The show’s first season boasted a huge average of 1.9 million viewers, and was much-praised by various critics, so naturally adding to Nigella’s net worth too.
Since then, Nigella Lawson has continued to work as a television presenter and writer. To date, Lawson’s books have sold a reported three million copies – certainly a huge contributor to her impressive net worth. Over the years, Nigella Lawson has also hosted a variety of different shows, such as “Nigella Feasts”, “Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen” and “Nigella Express”. Lawson’s book to accompany the show, also entitled “Nigella Express”, was reported to have outsold world-famous British television chef Jamie Oliver by over 100,000 copies. In 2003, Nigella Lawson was accorded the honour of overseeing the menu for the lunch between then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the President of the United States, George W. Bush.
Today, Nigella Lawson remains active in her field, appearing on the American reality cooking show “The Taste” alongside chef and fellow television personality Anthony Bourdain.
Nigella Lawson married journalist John Diamond in 1986, and they have a daughter and a son. Sadly Diamond died of throat cancer in 2001. Lawson married British businessman Charles Saatchi, in 2003, but the two divorced in 2013 after a somewhat stormy relationship.
