Greg Ellis Mathis, to give him his full name, was born on April 5, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, United States of America. Greg Mathis is a former judge who worked in 36th District Court of the State of Michigan, but who rose to prominence as the TV reality show “Judge Mathis” arbiter, which show he has been working on since 1999, a run of 16 seasons for the program so far. In addition to judging in real life and on television, Greg Mathis has published several books.

Greg Mathis was raised with three elder brothers by his mother Alice Lee Mathis. As a teenager, Greg got involved in street gangs, and as a result had lots of troubles, often leading to arrest. While he was imprisoned in the Wayne County Jail, his mother told him that she was sick with colon cancer. Because of this diagnosis, Greg received early probation, one condition of which required him to start working, actually at McDonald’s. He subsequently graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration. Mathis was disallowed from practicing law as long as he had an unrequited criminal past, however, after graduating from the University of Detroit Mercy he was elected a district court judge for Michigan’s 36th District and worked there for a five year period.

Greg Mathis is also active in politics. He began his career as an assistant to Clyde Cleveland who worked as a member of a city council. Afterwards, he worked as the head of Jesse Jackson’s Presidential campaign and Coleman Young’s re-election campaign. Later, he ran the east side city hall. Since 1999, Greg Mathis began to judge on the television program “Judge Mathis”, which is very popular up to date through its sixteen seasons, so far, and is the longest-running television court show by far, and in 2004 the show won the NAACP Image Award.
