Millie Jackson grew up in Newark, New Jersey and spent her teenage years with her aunt in Brooklyn, New York. Before winning the talent contest in a Harlem nightclub, Millie occasionally worked as a model for such magazines as JIVE and Sepia. Jackson won the above mentioned contest in 1964 and signed a contract with MGM Records in 1970. However, she had to wait until 1972 for the release of her debut album “Millie Jackson”, which peaked at the No. 166 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart with singles “A Child of God (It’s Hard to Believe)”, “My Man, A Sweet Man”, “Ask Me What You Want”, and “I Miss You Baby”.
Jackson later signed a deal with New York-based Spring Records in 1973, and released her second album called “It Hurts So Good” that reached the No. 13 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums. The “Caught Up” (1974) was her first gold-certified release, while bigger commercial success came with the album “Feelin’ Bitchy” in 1977, which achieved the golden status, reaching No. 4 place on the Billboard Top Soul Albums, and No. 34 on Billboard Pop Albums, which only increased her net worth.
By the end of the ‘70s, Millie had released four more notable albums: “Get It Out’cha System” (1978), “A Moment’s Pleasure” (1979), “Royal Rappin’s” (1979) with Isaac Hayes, and “Live & Uncensored” (1979). The “E.S.P. (Extra Sexual Persuasion)” in 1983 was the last album released under Spring Records, and the music critic Robert Christgau gave the album a “B-“. Millie then signed a deal with Jive Records in 1985, and released “An Imitation of Love” in 1986. The album peaked at the No. 16 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and No. 119 on the Billboard 200 chart. She ended the 80’s with “Back to the S**t!” in 1989, which was famous for its cover, featuring Jackson sitting on a toilet with a pair of panties on her ankles.

In 2001, Jackson’s latest studio album called “Not for Church Folk!” came out, but like its predecessors in the ‘90s, it wasn’t a popular one.In June 2015, Millie was inducted into the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
