Michael “Doc” Emrick was born on 1 August 1946, in La Fontaine, Indiana USA, and is a commentator and sportscaster, best known for his television work, specifically on ice hockey. He is the head announcer for NHL national telecasts for NBC Sports and NBC, but all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.

He’s won numerous awards including the NHL Lester Patrick Award, making him one of only five to have received it for media work. All of his achievements have ensured the position of his wealth.

Mike attended Manchester University, and graduated with a degree in speech in 1968. The following year he got his MA in radio/television from Miami University, then started teaching at Geneva College which he did for three years, and he also got his first experience of NHL coverage. A few more years into his career, he completed his Ph.D. in Communications from Bowling Green State University, hence the nickname ‘Doc’.

In 1973, Emrick became a professional sportscaster when he was hired to work for WHLS doing play-by-play, and also worked for the IHL team i public relations. He broadcast for the AHL Maine Mariners for three seasons before serving as the voice of the Devils in the 1982 NHL season, staying with the Devils for four years. Afterwards, he started working with the Philadelphia Flyers, broadcasting on both radio and television, and staying with the team until 1993,working with Bill Clement . He then returned to the Devils and continued to be their voice until 2011, including commentating on the team’s 1995 Stanley Cup victory.

While working for specific teams, he also started doing play-by-play for NBC, CBS, ABC, ESPN, TNT and many more. He also did announcing work for “The NHL on ESPN” and “NHL on Fox”, covering the XVI Squaw Valley Winter Olympic Games, and after the NHL broadcast rights were given to ABC, he then worked for them from 2000 to 2004,. He also worked as the announcer for. In 2005, he became the announcer for “NHL on Versus” and “NHL on NBC”. Mike also did coverage of the Summer Olympic Games, calling water polo. While at CBS, he called NCAA basketball tournament games as well as NFL games. In 2011, he then left the New Jersey Devils to exclusively work for NBC Sports.

For his work, Emrick has won numerous awards, including a CableACE Award for best play-by-play announcer. In 2004, he won the Lester Patrick Trophy for his outstanding service to the sport. Four years later, he was given the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his contributions to broadcasting. He also became the first hockey announcer to win a national Sports Emmy Award, for his work on “NHL on NBC”. In 2014, he won the NSSA Sportscaster of the Year Award.

For his personal life, it is known that Mike is married to Joyce, and they reside in St. Clair, Michigan. He is a cancer survivor and is also an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He also founded the NHL Pronunciation Guide, which helps broadcasters with hockey’s most difficult names.
