Steven Patrick Morrissey Wiki Biography

Steven Patrick Morrissey was born on 22 May 1959, in Davyhulme, Lancashire, England, to Elizabeth, a librarian, and Peter Morrissey, a hospital porter, of Irish descent. He is a singer, songwriter and author, perhaps best known as the lead singer of The Smiths, an ’80s indie rock band.

So just how loaded is Morrissey? Sources state that Morrissey has earned a net worth of over $50 million, as of late 2016. His assets include a number of homes, in Los Angeles, Rome, Switzerland and the UK. He has amassed his wealth during his singing career which now spans almost 40 years.

Morrissey grew up in a working-class family in Manchester, along with his sister. He attended St. Mary’s Technical Modern School, but eventually left to later enrol at Stretford Technical College, obtaining three O-levels in English Literature, Sociology and the General Paper. Morrisey began struggling with depression during his teens, and expressing himself in writing became a way to cope with his condition, with poetry being his top priority.

During the ’70s, he became a huge fan of pop and glam rock, attending numerous concerts and gigs, while working as a clerk for the civil service in the Inland Revenue, and later in a record store and as a hospital porter. In the late ’70s, he was a member of two punk bands, The Nosebleeds and Slaughter and the Dogs.

In the early ’80s Morrissey pursued a career in musical journalism, writing a number of short books; as a passionate fan, he wrote a book on James Dean and another one on the “New York Dolls”. In 1982, he teamed up with guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, to form the band called “The Smiths”, with Morrissay being the lead singer. Signing with Rough Trade Records, their first single, “Hand in Glove”, came out in 1983, and their self-titled debut album was released the following year, reaching #2 on the UK Album Chart. In the next few years, the band released a number of singles and five more albums, all of which peeked at either #1 or #2 in the UK. Their popularity boosted. Morrissey established himself as a major name in the British music scene, but also in the USA, gathering a huge funbase and a significant net worth as well.

After The Smiths fell apart in 1987 mainly due to conflicts between Morrissey and Marr, he embarked on a solo career, releasing a well-received, gold certified album entitled “Viva Hate” in 1988. He followed it with a number of singles and several albums, among them the most popular being the 1992 Grammy nominated “Your Arsenal”, and the 1994 “Vauxhall and I”, his second solo #1 album in the UK. Morrissey enjoyed an astonishing popularity among worldwide audiences, constantly reinforcing his status as a star and improving his wealth as well.

The early 2000s saw the release of his successful albums ”You Are the Quarry”, ”Ringleader of the Tormentors” and ”Years of Refusal”. His last album, ”World Peace Is None of Your Business”, was released in 2015. Due to health issues, Morrissey has recently canceled tours and hasn’t performed much, nor has he record new material. Regarded as one of the greatest lyricists in the history of Britain, Morrissey has remained an icon in the world of pop music, which has enabled him to earn a considerable wealth.

Aside from music, the talented artist released his autobiography in 2013, and then his debut novel entitled “List of the Lost” in 2015.

In his private life, Morrissey has always been vague when it comes to his sexuality. He spent a great period of his life living in celibacy, and denying the speculations that he is gay. However, in his autobiography, he confirmed having relationships with both men and women. He hasn’t been married. A passionate advocate of animal welfare issues, Morrissey has endorsed vegetarianism throughout his life. He has also criticized British royalty and political figures, as well as various British national and cultural principles.
