Mary-Rosa Alleyne Berry Wiki Biography
Mary-Rosa Alleyne Berry was born on 24 March 1935, in Bath, Somerset, England, and is best known as a writer and television personality, who has appeared in series such as ‘‘The Great British Baking Show’’ and ‘‘The Great Holiday Baking Show’’.
So just how rich is Mary Berry as of early 2018? According to authoritative sources, this writer has net worth of 21 million with her wealth being accumulated from her career in the mentioned fields.
Berry is the second child of Margaret and Alleyne William Steward Berry. Coming from a family that was interested in cooking and baking, it was little wonder that Mary decided to follow their footsteps, being passionate about that field as well. Mary’s father was a surveyor and planner, and mayor of Bath, and her mother a housewife interested in food preparations. As a young teenager, Mary had poliomyelitis and spent some time in hospital, and despite recovering, this condition caused her to have a twisted spine and one weaker arm. Speaking about her time at the hospital, Mary added that it ‘‘toughened her up’’. When it comes to Berry’s education, she attended Bath High School and was encouraged by her teacher, Miss Date, to focus on cooking. The first meal she made in the class was a treacle sponge pudding. Having finished with her high school education, Berry attended Bath College of Domestic Science, where she studied catering and institutional management. After that, her first job was at the Bath electricity board, but had aspirations to move from her hometown, which however, her family didn’t let her do until she turned 21. At the age of 22, Mary applied for the Dutch Dairy Bureau, and in the same period she attended City & Guilds courses in the evenings. Subsequently, she underwent the process to get her qualifications from the French Le Cordon Bleu school, which resulted in her moving to France. For Mary, that was a shocking experience as her first meal consisted of horse meat, which she had problems with, as she had a pony back in Bath.
In 1970, she wrote the book entitled ‘‘The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook’’, and achieve considerable success with it, which is still popular as of today, despite being older than four decades. During the same year, she became a food editor of ‘‘Ideal Home’’ magazine, and remained in that position over the course of the next three years. Continuing to work at a steady pace, Mary wrote ‘‘Mary Berry’s Complete Television Cookbook’’ in 1979, ‘‘Fast Cakes’’ in 1981 and ‘‘Mary Berry’s Cookery Course: A Step-by-step Masterclass in Home Cooking’’ in 1991.
Besides being an author, Berry is also active on television. As of 2010, she began working on ‘‘The Great British Baking Show’’, as a judge and presenter in a total of 72 episodes. In 2015, she joined the cast of ‘‘The Great Holiday Baking Show’’ as a judge, working side by side with Johnny Iuzzini, Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez, and remained in the series until 2017. Berry was also the presenter in ‘‘Mary Berry Everyday’’, and besides which she has appeared in numerous talk shows, including ‘‘Mel & Sue’’ and ‘‘Loose Women’’. In all, Mary has had 46 television projects.
Besides her cookery books, Mary’s recipes can be found in a mobile app called ‘‘Mary Berry: In Mary We Trust’’.
In her private life, Berry has been married to Paul John March Hunnings since 1966 and the couple had three children – Thomas Alleyne March, Annabel Mary March and William John March, who died in 1989 at the age of 19, in a car crash. Berry is recognized for her charity work too, and is a patron of Child Bereavement UK. Speaking about her religious views, Mary is a member of the Holy Trinity Church in Penn.
