Marcin Gortat was born on 17 February 1984, in Łódź, Poland, and is well-known as professional basketball player, who currently plays for the Washington Wizards in National Basketball Associaiton (NBA).

Gortat was interested in sports from an early age – his father, Janusz was a boxer and won bronze as a light heavyweight at the Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976 Olympics, and his mother, Alicja played volleyball for Poland. In late April of the same year, he played in his first playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers, Marcin’s team winning with 4-2.
However, in July 2009 Gortat became a free agent, and wanted to sign a five-year $34 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, however, the Magic matched the offer, so he continued playing for the mentioned team, but was reportedly disappointed, as he continuously had limited playing time, and was a backup player for Dwight Howard. Eventually in December 2010, Marcin was traded to the Phoenix Suns alongside players Mickaël Piétrus and Vince Carter. In his new team, Marcin had more playing time, and he was starting at center, becoming popular under the nickname ‘’The Polish Hammer’’. In 2011-12 season, he had an average of 10.0 rebounds per game and 15.4 points, and at season’s end joined the Polish national basketball team attempting to qualify for the FIBA EuroBasket, scoring 27 points during his second game against Finland.
In November 2012, he had 10 rebounds, scored 23 points and additionally had a career high seven blocks in his team’s 117-110 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. In October of the following year, he was traded to the Washington Wizard, and in late February 2014, he had a career-high 12 rebounds and 31 points, leading his team to a victory against the Toronto Raptors. On 13 May, Marcin helped his team avoid elimination in game five of the play-offs, recording 16 rebounds and 31 points.
