Kristen was raised in a suburb of Milwaukee. She attended St. Eugene’s Catholic Grade School and Whitefish Bay High School, then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in drama from New York University. In 1993, she portrayed Alice Kosnick in ‘’The Debt’’, and in the following year she was a guest star in an episode of ‘’Chicago Hope’’. In 1996, she was cast as Grace Chapman in ‘’London Suite’’, then joined the cast of ‘’3rd Rock from the Sun’’ starring as Sally Solomon. The series received mostly positive reviews over six seasons, and won two Golden Globe awards, with Johnston nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television in 1997; the series ended in 2001.
In 2002, Kristen made an appearance in ‘’Austin Powers in Goldmember’’, which grossed over $296 million, and in the same year, she provided the voice for Sylvia in ’’Ice Age’’.
