Joseph Heath Shuler, born on the 31st of December, 1971, is a businessman, former American politician and professional American Football player who became known for his transition from playing in the National Football League (NFL) to becoming a US Representative for North Carolina.

Born in Bryson City, North Carolina, Shuler came from a small family; he only has one younger brother. His father worked as a mail carrier while his mother is a homemaker. He attended Swain County High School, where his passion for football emerged. He became his team’s quarterback and led them to win two state championships. He even won the North Carolina High School Player of the Year.
Right after high school, Shuler was offered an academic scholarship at the University of Tennessee in 1990, which he immediately accepted. After a successful football career in college, in 1994, he was then selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. His career as a professional football player tremendously helped his net worth.
From 1994 to 1996, Shuler played with the Washington Redskins. The following year, he transferred to the New Orleans Saints and later on ended his career as a pro player with the Oakland Raiders in 1998. His career was consistently blighted with foot injuries, which eventually led to his retirement. Albeit short, his time as a professional football career helped his name and his wealth.
After his time in the NFL, Shuler went back to the University of Tennessee and finished his degree in psychology. He then pursued a career in real estate and became a professional. In 2005, Shuler made his intentions to run for the Democratic Party public clear, and in 2006, he ran for office and became the Representative for North Carolina. He held the post for six years and became known for being a whip of the Blue Dog Coalition. Despite being a member of the Democratic Party, he was known for opposing abortion rights, gun control, and same-sex marriage. Some of the bills Shuler sponsored during his time in the congress included H.R. 3065, the Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act; H.R. 2000, the SAVE Act of 2011; and H.R. 1434, the International Child Protection Act of 2011 among others. He was also assigned to the Committee on Budget, and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Hw was defeated in the 2013 elections, but his time in the congress also increased his net worth.
After his time in congress, Shuler decided to accept a lobbying position with Duke Energy.
In terms of his personal life, Shuler is married to Nikol Davis and together they have two children. He is a known member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
