Jonathan Toews Wiki Biography
Jonathan Bryan Toews was born on 29 April 1988, in Winnepeg, Manitoba Canada, and is a professional ice hockey player, best known to be a part of the National Hockey League (NHL) as the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s won numerous awards, and all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Jonathan Toews? As of mid-2016, sources estimate a net worth that is at $16 million, mostly earned through a successful career in ice hockey. He’s the third youngest captain in NHL history, and has also played with Team Canada, helping his country win numerous gold medals and as he continues his career it is expected that his wealth will increase.
Toews started his career as an amateur and was drafted by the Tri-City Americans during the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft, making him the first draft pick. However, he played midget AAA hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s instead from 2003 to 2005 thus retaining his NCAA eligibility, and would then return to ice hockey in college. He attended and played at the University of North Dakota, helping the school get to the NCAA Frozen Four two times as an alternate captain, helped North Dakota win the Broadmoor Cup, plus was named West Regional MVP. In 2006, he joined the NHL Entry Draft, ranked third overall by scouts.
He was indeed drafted third overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks, and opted out of college hockey to join the Blackhawks on a three-year entry level contract. During his rookie year, he would go on the second longest point scoring streak during the start of an NHL career, getting a point in his first ten games, but was then side lined with a sprained knee. Despite this injury, he finished third in points and led the rookies in goal-scoring. Toews ended up as a runner up for the Calder Memorial Trophy.
After great success during his first year, he was named Blackhawks team captain, the third-youngest in NHL history. The following year, he scored his first hat trick, and was voted to the 2009 NHL All-Star Game. He helped the Blackhawks get to the Stanley Cup playoffs, but were eliminated by the Detroit Red Wings. Nearing the end of his contract, he was given an extension worth $6.5 million annually for five seasons. Subsequently, in 2010 Jonathan would lead the team to their first Stanley Cup championship, against the Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the second-youngest captain to win the Cup. He was also given the Conn Smythe Trophy and became the youngest player to join the Triple Gold Club. His success led him to be portrayed on the cover of the video game “NHL 11”.
Despite a record breaking performance by Toews during the 2010-11 season, the Blackhawks only barely reached the playoffs, after they traded several of their players due to salary cap constraints, and were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by the Vancouver Canucks. In 2012, Jonathan had little playing time due to an injury, but returned in the lockout-shortened 2013 season. He would go on and help the Blackhawks get to the playoffs in 2014 but would fall short in the Western Conference Final. In the same year, he and Patrick Kane were given eight-year extensions worth $10.5 million annually.
In 2015, Toews helped the Blackhawks win another Stanley Cup championship, against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and would win a Mark Messier Leadership Award. He was also awarded an ESPY Award, and appeared on the cover of “NHL 16”.
For his personal life, the so-called lucky lady in his life is girlfriend Lindsey Vecchione. It is known that Toews speaks fluent English and French. Thanks to his success, Manitoba named a northern lake after him, and a community center in St. Vital also changed their name to the Jonathan Toews Community Centre. Aside from these, he trains with EVO Ultrafit throughout each year.
