Terry Porter was born on the 8th April 1963, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA, and is a basketball coach and retired player, who is currently coaching the men’s basketball team of the University of Portland. Previously, he coached NBA teams the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks.

Terry grew up in his hometown with his five siblings, who are all older than him. He went to one of Milwaukee’s South Division High Schools, where he played as a basketball forward. Following his matriculation, Terry enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he continued to play basketball under head coach Dick Bennett, sharing the court with future basketball player and coach Brad Soderberg.

During his college career, Terry posted some good numbers, which brought him into the Olympic Team trials in 1984, next to Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Wayman Tisdale and Steve Alford among others. However, he didn’t get into the first squad, as the team already had such guards as Alvin Robertson, Leon Wood, and Michael Jordan. After his short stint with the Olympic team, Terry brought himself to the attention of NBA scouts, and after his senior year season in which he averaged over 19 points and four assists per game, he was called up for the National Association of Basketball Coaches-Valvoline All-America Game.

His professional career started in 1985 following that year’s NBA Draft, in which he was selected as the 24th pick by the Portland Trailblazers. He played for the Blazers until 1995, and still holds the record for most assists with 5,319. He had his best season in 1992-1993, in which he averaged 18.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game in 81 starts.

After he became a free agent in 1995, he joined the Minnesota Timberwolves, however, his numbers were nowhere near the ones he had in Portland. Nevertheless, he still contributed to the teams pursuit for the NBA playoffs in 1996-1997 season.

Before his retirement in 2002, Terry spent a season in Miami and three years as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.

During his career, Terry played in two All-Star games, in 1991, and 1993, while his No. 30 is retired by the Portland Trailblazers. Also, he won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1993, for his contribution to the community.

Immediately after retirement, he ventured into coaching, becoming the assistant coach at the Sacramento Kings. However, in 2003 he became the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks and served in position until 2005, when he was let go after failing to secure a play-off berth.

He then joined the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach, and after successful results, he was recruited by the Phoenix Suns in 2008 as their head coach to replace Mike D’Antoni.

In the first 51 games with the Suns, Porter posted a record of 28 wins and 23 lost games, but the Suns officials decided to fire him, as the team was in ninth place in the Western Conference.

Terry stayed in the NBA until 2016, serving as assistant coach to Rick Adelman at the Minnesota Timberwolves, and also served as his replacement following Adelman’s family issues.

In 2016, he became the head coach of the men’s basketball team of the University of Portland, which has also added to his wealth.

Regarding his personal life, Terry is married to Susan, with whom he has three children.

Terry is a well-known philanthropist; he started the Milwaukee Scholars Fund, through which he provides scholarships to minority students in Milwaukee, and has also been devoted to the Boys and Girls Club organization, and is a part of the organization’s Hall of Fame.
