Watt grew up in a family that loved sports and especially football. During his childhood he played hockey, and attended Pewaukee High School where he played various sports including basketball, baseball, track and field, and of course, football. He became a breakout football player receiving numerous awards in his senior year.

Scouts for college football didn’t rated him highly, as he was neither the best at offense nor defence, but he eventually settled on playing for Central Michigan on a scholarship. J. J. played tight end during his first year, and the team even wanted him to play as offensive tackle. After his first year, he decided to forgo the scholarship to return to Wisconsin and play as a defensive end. He attended the University of Wisconsin, and had to work as a delivery boy for Pizza Hut to make ends meet. He played well for Wisconsin, leading the team in forced fumbles, tackles for loss, quarterback hurries, and blocked kicks. He became the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Watt decided to forgo his senior year in order to join the 2011 NFL Draft. Around this time, Watt had started to develop his skills and body well, and was one of the top performing prospects, so was selected by the Texans as the 11th pick overall, and signed a four year $11.24 million contract. His net worth would start to rise at this point.

Many fans didn’t like the decision of drafting him but their opinion soon changed after his first season, as with his performance, the Texans would appear in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The following year became the breakout year for Watt as he broke records and was noticed by many for his skills in defence. He became Defensive Player of the Year, the first Texan to receive such an award, and was also named in the 2013 Pro-Bowl team. J.J. continued to play well and the following year earned him another Pro-Bowl appearance, as captain. By 2014, the Texans decided to extend his contract, giving him an additional six-year contract with the possibility of earning up to $100 million. He continued to play exceptionally well, and was named to another Pro-Bowl as well as the All-Pro first team.

He played well in the 2015 season, but was hampered by an injured groin and fractured left hand, so had to miss out on the Pro Bowl due to surgery. Despite a great performance, the Texans were shut out in the Wild Card round.
