Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. Wiki Biography
Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. was born on the 31st December 1943, in Roswell, New Mexico, USA, and died on the 12th October 1997 in Monterey Bay, California, USA. As John Denver, he was a musician – singer and songwriter, who released over 50 albums, including “Take Me To Tomorrow” (1970), “Windsong” (1975), “It’s About Time” (1983), etc. He was also recognized as an actor. His career in the entertainment industry was active from 1962 to 1997.
Have you ever wondered how rich was John Denver? According to authoritative sources, it was estimated that the overall size of Denver’s net worth was as high as $60 million, with the main source of his fortune his work in the music world. Another source came from his appearances in several television and film projects.
John Denver was raised by Lt. Col. Henry John Deutschendorf and Erma Louise Swope. From an early age he showed an interest in music, when he received an acoustic guitar as a gift. He enrolled at Texas Tech University to study Architecture, but soon quit and started to pursue a career in the entertainment industry as a musician.
John went on to have a successful solo career as a singer and songwriter, but first he was a member of several folk bands, including the Chad Mitchell Trio, which later assumed new name “Denver, Boise and Johnson”, with its members being David Boise and Michael Johnson. However, before the end of the 1960s, he left the band, and started a career on his own. John’s debut release was the 1969 album “Rhymes And Reasons”. The following year, John released two more albums “Take Me To Tomorrow”, and “Whose Garden Was This”, but they were nowhere near rendering as successful albums, as they didn’t chart at all. Nevertheless, John didn’t surrender, and continued to produce music, releasing his fourth album “Poems, Prayers & Promises” in 1971, which reached No. 6 on the US Country and it was also certified platinum, encouraging John to continue with music, but what is more important, it increased his net worth to a large degree. Since then his career went only upwards, and so did his net worth. John’s next album was released the same year, entitled “Aerie”, which reached gold certification.
During the 1970s, John became one of the most successful folk singers, with his every album reaching at least platinum certification, including “Rocky Mountain High” (1972), which reached double platinum and gold certification and is also one of the most successful albums John had ever released; “Back Home Again” (1974), which reached three times platinum, one silver and one gold certification, and was his first album to reach No. 1 on the US Country chart. His next album, “Windsong” was also greeted with success, landing again at No. 1 on the US Country Chart, and it increased John’s net worth by a large margin, as the album reached double platinum certification. Before the end of the 1970s, he released three more albums “Spirit” (1976), “I Want To Live” (1977), and “John Denver” (1979).
With the beginning of the 1980s, his popularity began to drop, but he released seven albums, such as “Autograph” (1980), “Some Days Are Diamonds” (1981), which managed to reach gold certification, “Seasons OF The Heart” (1982), which was also certified gold, “One World” (1986), and “Higher Ground” (1988).
Before his death, John released five more albums, however, his decline in popularity continued, and he tragically died in a plane crash, marking the end of a successful career. Several compilation albums were released posthumously, including “The Essential John Denver” (2007), and the latest “All of My Memories: The John Denver Collection” (2014).
Apart from a career in music, John tried his luck as an actor, appearing in films such as “Walking Thunder” (1997), “Savant” (1998), and “Higher Ground” (1988), among many others and with moderate success.
Thanks to his successful career, John earned several prestigious awards, including the 1975 Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special, 1998 Grammy Hall of Fame Award for his hit song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. Furthermore, John was inducted into the Songwriter Hall Of Fame in 1996, and in 2014, John posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Regarding his personal life, John Denver wasfirst married to Annie Martell (1967-83), with whom he had two children. Five years later, he married Cassandra Delaney with whom he was married until 1993; the couple had a child. In his free time, he was very active in politics and charity work, asin 1976 he founded the Windstar Foundation.

Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. Quotes
- [on composing for The Bears and I (1974)] Heck, I’m no Henry Mancini or Michel Legrand. I just play the guitar and write songs. I know I’m incapable of orchestrating an entire film. They just asked me to write something expressing the story about a guy who’s back from Vietnam and sorta lost, who goes to an Indian village in the Northwest.
Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. Important Facts
- He was posthumously awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 7065 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on October 24, 2014.
- Was offered the lead role of Zack Mayo in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), which he turned down saying he felt the script “read like a 1950s movie”. The role was instead given to Richard Gere.
- John’s father was of German descent (including ancestry from ethnic Germans who had lived in South Russia for many generations). John’s maternal grandfather was of German and Swiss-German ancestry, and John’s maternal grandmother was of English and Irish descent.
- NTSB accident report states the cause of the airplane crash that killed him was his attention being diverted to the fuel selector, when shortly after takeoff, his engine stalled due to fuel starvation. The fuel selector, in his newly purchased homebuilt, was located behind the pilot such that to change it he needed to turn left and reach behind his head. That caused him to move the control stick inadvertently to the left and down. That was a factor that led to the accident.
- The Federal Aviation Administration’s crash report was inconclusive regarding what caused Denver’s crash. It is widely known that Denver had twice been arrested for DUI in prior years, leading to questions as to whether his pilot’s license should have been revoked.
- Plane crash was about 100 yards offshore from a very popular landmark known as “Lover’s Point”.
- Inducted into the American Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1996.
- His final concert was in Corpus Christi, Texas, a week prior to his tragic accident.
- Met wife Annie Martell while performing a gig at Gustavus Adolphus College, in St. Peter, Minnesota, where she was a student.
- Mentioned in the song “Life Is a Rock But the Radio Rolled Me” by Reunion.
- Briefly attended the School of Architecture at Texas Tech.
- Lost two toes in an accident with a lawn mower.
- Biography in: “American National Biography.” Supplement 1, pp. 155-156. New York: Oxford University Press, 2002.
- Was cremated, and his ashes spread over the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
- He was any early follower of Werner Erhard, founder of the self-improvement association known as EST (Erhard Seminars Training). Denver once asked Erhard if he might become a trainer in the EST organization but was told he could contribute more by continuing his career as an entertainer – spreading the message, through his music, of taking personal responsibility for whatever happens in the world. Several of his subsequent songs reflected that philosophy.
- Uncle of the twin babies who played “Oscar” in the film Ghostbusters II (1989), William T. Deutschendorf and Henry J. Deutschendorf II. One would assume Henry was named after him. Though John Denver’s father was also named Henry John Deutschendorf and John Denver’s paternal-grandfather was John Henry Deutschendorf.
- Children from marriage with Cassandra Delaney; Jesse Belle.
- Children from marriage with Annie Martell; Zachary and Anna Kate (adopted).
- Listed as one of twelve “Promising New Actors of 1977” in John Willis’ Screen World, Vol. 29 (1977).
