Gary Anthony James Webb Wiki Biography

Gary Anthony James Webb was born on 8th March 1958, in Hammersmith, London, England, and is a singer and songwriting British pioneer of synth pop, known especially for one of his greatest hits – “Cars” – which reached number one on the British charts in 1979. He has been active since the end of the 1970’s.

How much is the net worth of Gary Numan? It has been estimated by authoritative sources that the overall size of his wealth is as much as $7 million, as of the data presented in the middle of 2017. Music is the major source of Numan’s fortune.

To begin with, the boy was raised in Hammersmith; Gary’s father was a bus driver at British Airways, which is why Gary wanted to become a pilot at an early stage, but this professional wish was not fulfilled due to a lack of schooling. Gary thought of many other professions, but already by the age of 15 he had begun to write songs, and played in several bands. Together with his uncle Jess Lidyard, and Paul Gardiner, he founded the band Tubeway Army. He first appeared under the pseudonym Valerian, and took his artist name Numan later.

Numan’s career really began at the end of the 1970s, when he founded the New Wave Band Tube Army. In 1979, they landed the worldwide hit “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”, and the same year, his already third album “Replicas” was number one in the British charts for four weeks. Later, another number one single hit followed, entitled “Cars”, with both singles certified gold. The two following albums (now under the name of Gary Numan), “The Pleasure Principle” (1979) and “Telekon” (1980), again appeared on the British charts, and until the middle of the 1980s, especially in England the band was very successful; all the aforementioned albums received certifications for sales. In 1982 he released the album “I, Assassin”, and had his last big single hit with “We Take Mystery”. By that time, however, his popularity had already begun to fall and after the album “Warriors” (1983) Beggars Banquet broke the record contract.

Numan subsequently founded his own record label, Numa Records and released the albums “Berserker” (1984), “The Fury” (1985) and “Strange Charm” (1986). He also collaborated with Bill Sharpe from the Shakatak group, and after several failures, his career turned around in the 1990s. The album “Sacrifice” (1994) received a positive reception by several critics. Groups like Hole, Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson made cover versions of his songs, and Nine Inch Nails mentioned Numan as an important influence. Numan’s new goth rock style resulted in albums like “Exile” (1997) and “Pure” (2000), which gave him a partially new audience, while his earlier music was re-launched.

In 2013, Numan released its twentieth studio album, “Splinter” (Songs from a Broken Mind), and the album “Savage” (Songs from a Broken World) is set for a late 2017 release.

Finally, in the personal life of the singer and musician, Numan married Gemma O’Neill in 1997. Today he lives with her and their three children in East Sussex – his family is largely excluded from public view. Numan claims to have a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome.

Gary Anthony James Webb Quotes

  • The previous Labour government was a disaster. World crises came and went and they sat on the fence with every single one of them, and then along came a party that wasn’t like that. Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher) had a clear idea about everything and seemed to be massively pro-British against the rest of the world.
  • I honestly don’t know what criteria makes someone right-wing or left-wing anymore. The boundaries of those definitions seem to be in a state of flux. I’m not socialist, I know that. I don’t believe in sharing my money. If I go out and work my nuts off and make some money, I don’t feel that I should have to share it with my community.
