Ellen DeGeneres Wiki Biography
American comedian, television personality and actress Ellen Lee DeGeneres was born in Metairie, Louisiana, on 26 January 1958. She is best known from hosting her widely syndicated TV talk show – “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” – since 2003, and previously for starring in the popular sitcom “Ellen” during the 1990s.
So just how rich is Ellen DeGeneres, as of early 2017? Authoritative sources estimate that Ellen’s net worth is almost $400 million, the main source being her talk show which is reputed to bring in $65 million yearly, contributing significantly to the $85 million dollars total she makes each year. Assets include her Californian estate valued at $30 million.
When Ellen was thirteen years old her parents divorced and she went to Texas with her mother, where she attended Atlanta High School, but after matriculation enrolled at the University of New Orleans. However, in need of money Ellen took various jobs, working as a waitress and bartender, in a supermarket, performing clerical work and painting houses. In odd moments she would moonlight at clubs of comedy in New Orleans.
When Ellen DeGeneres was 20 years old, she started her professional career, travelling around the US and playing to audiences wherever she was welcome, eventually becoming MC at Clyde’s Comedy Club in New Orleans, so successfully that “Showtime” named Ellen as America’s Funniest Person in 1982. Later in the ‘80s she starred in the film “Coneheads”, and then in a series of films for the show called “Ellen’s Energy Adventure”. She began making appearances in “The Tonight Show”, impressing producers so that the situation comedy named “Ellen” was launched on ABC TV in 1994, and lasted for five seasons and 109 episodes in total. In February of 1997 the show’s ratings rose to the top, apparently because Ellen’s personage turned out to be homosexual, and shortly afterwards, Ellen appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and ‘outed’ herself, obviously to widespread approval from audiences. Her net worth was certainly boosted.
The next significant step in Ellen DeGeneres’ career was the creation of the daytime “Ellen DeGeneres Show”, which debuted in September 2003. This syndicated talk show scored very high ratings after only a few episodes, and was so successful that after its premier season it was rewarded as the Best Talk Show, and nominated for eleven Daytime Emmy Awards. This show still goes to air, projected to at least 2020, and has won over 40 Daytime Emmy Awards. Nowadays it is acknowledged to be the most watchable talk show on daytime television, averaging audiences of over four million daily.
Additionally, Ellen DeGeneres was a judge in a popular reality TV show “American Idol”, but only in the ninth season. She has also hosted the Academy Awards in 2007 and 2014, Grammy Awards in 1996 and ’97, and Emmy Awards in 2001 and 2005.
In her personal life, Ellen DeGeneres has been openly gay for many years, and since 2004 has been in a relationship with actress Portia De Rossi. When same-sex marriage was legalized in California, Ellen and Portia married in 2008 on Ellen’s California estate.. She was previously partners with Anne Heche from 1997 to 2000, and Alexandra Hedison from 2001 to 2004. Ellen is a strong advocate for LGBT rights, AIDS awareness, and animal rights – being a former vegan.

- Be kind to one another.
- We can sit and worry about what’s going to happen to us two weeks from now. I’d rather focus on the amazing things happening right in front of us. Animals help us do that.
- I’m glad I’m funny. I’m glad I make people happy, because that’s very important. But I’m most proud to be known as a kind person…Because kindness spreads, and the world is a little nicer out there.
- Never follow anyone else’s path, unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path; then, by all means, you should follow that path.
- What goes up must come down, which is why I don’t wear tube tops.
- Find out who you are and be that person. That’s what your soul was put on this Earth to be. Find that truth, live that truth and everything else will come.
- On why she, a non-singing entertainer, would be a successful American Idol (2002) judge replacement: I know I’m going to be a great judge – because I’ve spent my whole life being judged.
- Every morning, I would come down to the kitchen and I would see myself making coffee and I would think ‘oh, she’s pretty’. (on what life would be like with an identical twin)
- There’s two things I’ve always wanted to do in my life. One is to host the Oscars. The second is to get a call from Laura Ziskin. You can imagine that day’s diary entry. – After receiving a call from Ziskin, producer of the 2007 Oscars, requesting that Ellen host.
- Really, he called me that? Ellen Degenerate? I’ve been getting that since the fourth grade. I guess I’m happy I could give him work. [When told in an interview that, after she revealed her homosexuality, Jerry Falwell called her ‘Ellen Degenerate’].
- “I look at anything in nature and how things work-the stars, the pyramids-and I can’t imagine that there’s not some kind of design to it all. There’s got to be something big that we don’t understand. I do believe in Jesus. I believe in being good to one another. Life is about spending our time here contributing and not taking away. That’s my faith.” (Redbook, January 2006)
- “I’d like to be more patient! I just want everything now. I’ve tried to meditate, but it’s really hard for me to stay still. I’d like to try to force myself to do it, because everybody says how wonderful meditation is for you, but I can’t shut my mind up. So patience and learning is the key.” (Redbook, January 2006)
- “I just like observing people-it’s something I’ve done ever since I was a kid, and I got really good at it. That’s a big part of why I became a comedian. My audience is filled with every kind of person you can imagine, and I love that.” (Redbook, January 2006)
- Sometimes the greatest things are the most embarrassing.
- On hosting the Emmys after the 9/11 tragedy (November 4, 2001): “We’re told to go on living our lives as usual, because to do otherwise is to let the terrorists win, and really, what would upset the Taliban more than a gay woman wearing a suit in front of a room full of Jews?”
- You say you’re sick and tired of hearing about me? I’ve got news for you: I’M sick and tired of hearing about me.
- My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She’s ninety-seven now, and we don’t know where the hell she is.
