Donald McKinley Glover Wiki Biography
Born Donald McKinley Glover on the 25th September on Edwards Air Force Base, California USA, he is a rapper, actor, comedian and producer, who goes under the name Childish Gambino. He is one of nine rappers who has won the Golden Globe award for their work in motion pictures. He first came to prominence as a writer for the sitcom “30 Rock”, and since then cemented his place in the world of entertainment by showcasing his numerous talents.
Have you ever wondered how rich Childish Gambino is, as of late 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Gambino’s wealth is as high as $4.5 million, an amount earned through his successful career, active since 2006.
Before becoming Childish Gambino, Dover spent his childhood in Stone Mountain, Georgia with his brother and a bunch of other children, since his parents, Beverly and Donald Sr. were foster parents. Growing up, Glover was taught about Jehovah’s Witnesses, and along the way became one. He went to DeKalb School of the Arts, and once a school yearbook came out in his senior year, under Gambino’s picture wrote “Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons”, which eventually proved not too far away from the truth, as he later wrote a spec script for the particular animated series.
After matriculation, he enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, from which he obtained a degree in dramatic writing in 2006.
During his study years he started building a name for himself, firstly joining the sketch comedy group, Derrick Comedy, comprised of Dominic Dierkes, DC Pierson, Meggie McFadden, and Dan Eckman, which in the beginning filmed comedy videos for YouTube, but after becoming successful, they wrote, produced and directed the feature “Mystery Team”, in which Gambino starred; the film came out in 2009, which marked the start of his professional acting career. Before that, he contacted David Miner to whom he sent his spec script for “The Simpsons”, and in short period he received an invitation from Miner and Tina Frey to come to work on the sitcom “30 Rock”. From 2006 until 2009, Gambino worked as a writer for the show, for which he took home three Writer Guild Awards. His career as a writer and actor steadily developed, and he was chosen for the role of Troy Barnes, one of the lead characters in the TV series “Community” (2009-2014), which increased his net worth to a large degree. In recent years, he has appeared in the sci-fi horror “The Lazarus Effect” (2015), then the comedy film “Magic Mike XXL” also in 2015, while in 2017 he portrayed Aaron Davis in the sci-fi action adventure “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, starring Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, and Robert Downey Jr.
When it comes to his music career, his stage name, Childish Gambino was acquired through the Wu-Tang Clan name generator; his music debut happened in 2008, when he released the independent album entitled “Sick Boi”, while the following year he released another independent album – “Poindexter”.
This brought fame to Gambino as he reached a wider public, and was able to consolidate his career as a musician. In 2010, he released two mixtapes “I Am Just a Rapper”, and “I Am Just A Rapper 2”. In 2011 he signed a contract with Glassnote Records, and he started working on his debut major label release. With the help of Ludwig Ludwig Göransson, Gambino recorded the album “Camp”, which came out in November 2011 and reached No. 11 on the US Billboard 200 chart, while it peaked at No. 2 on both US Top Rap Albums and US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. His next full-length album “Because the Internet” was released through Island, and Universal Records, in addition to Glassnote, and eventually achieved gold status in the USA, which added substantially to his net worth. Also, the album topped the US Rap chart, and reached seventh on the Billboard 200. His third album came out in 2016, “Awaken, My Love!”, and meantime he worked on a mixtape and an EP, respectively “STN MTN” and “Kauai”, the sales of which also contributed to his net worth.
Regarding his personal life, Childish Gambino is the father of a son, born in 2016, and is expecting his second child. Unfortunately, no information about his girlfriend or wife is available online.

Donald McKinley Glover Quotes
- I’m not scared of the future at all. The future is progress if you treat it right.
- I’m not a big party animal, but I like to create moments people can hold on to.
- If you’re on Twitter, what you’re saying is, ‘I’m important enough for you to care what I think.’
- The only reason I’m able to do music is because I’m making money on ‘Community.’ If I wasn’t, I couldn’t pay for things.
- Twitter does have an effect on everything – things you put out there, they are out there for good.
- Usually, if I think something is really funny, I’m not gonna test it. I’ll just test it when I’m onstage.
- We put stereotypes on ourselves. Everybody does that. But I think it’s just a little harder for black kids to just be who they are.
- When anybody pays you to be creative, you’re very lucky.
- Black culture is a fight. We want to hold on to what we are, but sometimes the things that we are can be totally negative. You have to think: can’t we try something new and not be seen as suspect?
- I call ‘Community’ the best day job in the world, because between takes, I get to write music. I get to write sketches. I get to write movies. It’s the best job ever.
- I personally don’t believe people really grow. They just learn stuff when they were a kid, and hold on to it, and that affects every relationship they have.
- I started doing ’30 Rock’ and started writing ‘Mystery Team’ at the beginning of that. While I was doing ‘Mystery Team,’ I started practicing stand-up. While I was doing stand up, I got ‘Community.’ It’s like I planted trees six years ago, and now they have fruit.
- I’m very impatient, so I was like, ‘I want to be able to do whatever I want now.’ But even the biggest stars – you look back and they weren’t overnight.
- The thing about stand-up was, I was doing all this sketch and YouTube stuff where I was not being censored and I got to do my own thing, and it was really cool.
- A lot of the rap shows I saw as a kid were boring, but if you went to a Rage show or a Justice show, the kids were losing their minds.
- Also, I realized a lot of kids are listening to me. Whether I want to be or not, they’re looking up to me.
- Black men struggle with masculinity so much. The idea that we must always be strong really presses us all down – it keeps us from growing.
- But I just think I was lucky enough to figure out early on that I wanted to do comedy, so that’s what I put all my effort into.
- Careers very rarely are a waste of time; jobs usually are.
- I felt like high school for me was like a big whirlpool of me trying to figure out what was OK for me to do.
- I have an obsession with books about kids with Asperger’s syndrome.
- I think it’s a comedian’s job to make everything funny. Nothing is off-limits.
- I try to be me to the utmost.
- I’m probably going to get in trouble for this but ‘American Dad’ is one of my favorite shows. It gets very dark in places but the jokes are there.
- I had a ‘Simpsons’ and ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ spec and I remember thinking I was never going to hear from them again. Even after meeting with Tina, I left thinking I wasn’t going to get it. I don’t tell a lot of other comedians the story of how I ended up there because I guess a lot of people say it’s like a fairy tale. But I just think I was lucky enough to figure out early on that I wanted to do comedy, so that’s what I put all my effort into. — on getting the job as a writer on “30 Rock”.
- Writing is a very strenuous thing – it’s like banging your head against a wall. At the end of the day, acting is better, just because nobody ever asked me if I wanted a Pellegrino in the writer’s room.
- When you think of the former high school football star, you think 6-foot-2, white, meathead as the model for that kind of character. Since I’m not 6-foot-2 or white, I just thought about what I could bring to it. I thought about Smash Williams from ‘Friday Night Lights,’ like the cocky quarterback, and played around with that. — on his character Troy in “Community”. - L.A. is such a different place. I miss New York so much. I almost teared up when I came back and wanted a Guinness and realized I could drink it and take a cab home. I remembered that I could be a functional alcoholic in New York, like I used to be!

- In her 2011 book “Bossypants,” Tina Fey said that during the early years of the show, Donald Glover was 30 Rock’s only black writer. She also said that he was so young that when he started on the writing staff, he was still living in a New York University dorm and working there as a Resident Adviser. Since he came from a large family in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Fey said that Glover was especially good at writing for the character of Kenneth, who was also supposed to be from Stone Mountain.

- Raps under the stage name Childish Gambino.
- Auditioned to play Barack Obama on Saturday Night Live (1975) but lost to Fred Armisen.
