He studied at Oakland Technical High School in Oakland California, and later on at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduation, he then studied at the College of Sante Fe, New Mexico and also the University of New Mexico.

In 1994, he was cast as Baines in the series “Earth 2”, and after his first series, he then became a regular guest star in a variety of shows like “The Good News”, “Pacific Blue”, “The Pretenders” and “The Practice”. Nonetheless, his short roles and appearances helped start his career and also his net worth.

In 2003, he was cast in a recurring role in the comedy show “Girlfriends”, until finally landing a show that would catapult his career, which was “Soul Food”, in which he played the character of Kenny Chadway in the drama series from 2000 until its fifth season in 2004, significantly contributing to his net worth.

After the success of “Soul Food”, Dunbar was once again able to join a new television series entitled “Prison Break”, appearing in the show from 2005 to 2009, and playing the character of Benjamon Miles “C-Note” Franklin, one of his most memorable roles to date.
