To the audience, Diana Ross is best known as a member of a female singing group called “The Supremes”, which up to date is one of the most successful groups in the United States. The band was originally created in 1959 by Florence Ballard, Ross, Betty McGlown and Mary Wilson. Over the years, the group had undergone through many changes, until eventually Ross, Ballard and Wilson continued on as a trio. Ross’ contributions to the group were so immense that at some point the trio was renamed to “Diana Ross & the Supremes” before it was changed back to “The Supremes”. As a group, “The Supremes” released 29 studio albums and 30 compilation albums, which produced 33 Top 40 singles in the United States and 23 Top 10 singles in the United Kingdom. Considered to be among the best acts in the MoTown Records label, “The Supremes” had a huge impact on the music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. As they embraced a more feminine visual and audible style, “The Supremes” desired to show that black performers were as classy and sophisticated as white singers. Contributions that “The Supremes” have made to the music industry have been acknowledged with several Grammy Award nominations, while some of their songs made it to Grammy Hall of Fame, as well as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “The Supremes” influenced such popular female groups as “Destiny’s Child”, “The Pointer Sisters”, “The Emotions” and “TLC”.
