Charlie is the second child born to Patricia and Andrew Frederick Seaforth Cox, while he also a younger half-brother to Emma, Oliver, and Zoe, children from his father’s first marriage.
He went to Ashdown House School, located in the village of Forest Row in East Sussex, while later he transferred to Sherborne School, in Sherborne, Dorset. After matriculation, Charlie started honing his acting skills at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol.
Charlie made his professional debut in 2002 with a minor role in the TV series “Judge John Deed”, and the following year made his film debut with the role of Theo in the romantic drama “Dot the I”, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Natalia Verbeke, and James D’Arcy. In 2004, Charlie was Lorenzo in the film based on Shakespear play “The Merchant of Venice”, starring Al Pacino, Joseph Fiennes, and Lynn Collins. Continuing his rise, Charlie portrayed Giovanni Bruni in the award-winning adventure drama “Casanova”, directed by Lasse Hallström, and starring Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller, and Jeremy Irons, and it was in 2007 that Charlie got his first starring role, as Tristan Thorn in the fantasy adventure film “Stardust”, which only increased his net worth to a large degree, since the film grossed over $135 million worldwide. After the success of “Stardust”, Charlie was given another lead role, this time as Ian Hamilton, a legendary nationalist who fought to bring the Stone of Scone back to Scotland in the ‘50s, in the biopic “Stone of Destiny”, directed by Charles Martin Smith, while next to Charlie, the lead roles were given to Kate Mara, and Stephen McCole.
His next notable role was as Owen Sleater in the TV crime-drama series “Boardwalk Empire” (2011-2012), while in 2014 appeared in the Academy Award-winning biopic about famed physicist Stephen Hawking, entitled “The Theory of Everything”, starring Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking, and Felicity Jones, as his wife, Jane Hawking.
In 2015, Charlie became the first non-American actor to play Marvel’s superhero Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and in order to get into the character, Charlie had to gain thirty pounds of muscles. Also, Charlie wasn’t a fan of the comics, but after he won the role of Daredevil, Charlie became one of the biggest fans of the hero. Aside from his own series, Charlie has also portrayed Daredevil in the TV mini-series “The Defenders” (2017), further increasing his net worth.
Most recently, Charlie appeared in the horror film “Eat Locals” (2017) and will appear in the crime drama “The King of Thieves”, which is yet to receive its release date.
In addition to his screen roles, Charlie has also made a few notable stage appearances, including the role of Giovanni in the play “’Tis Pity She’s a Whore” in 2005, and in the play “Incognito” in 2016.
When it comes to his personal life, Charlie is in a relationship with Samantha Thomas, a co-producer of the “Jessica Jones” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” series. The couple has a daughter together, born in 2016.

Charlie Cox Quotes
- I was at a school in England, a prep school, from the ages of 8 and 13. And every play they did was a musical. Parents love musicals. And I don’t sing. It was driving me crazy. ‘We’re doing ‘Macbeth.” ‘Yes!’ ‘The musical!’ And I was always in the chorus, because of course, in all the main parts, you had to be able to sing.
- I really fell into drama school – I had a lot of lot of luck. I didn’t take criticism very well while I was there; in fact, I took it personally. With every note I got, I felt like they were telling me I was a bad person.
- There’s something very special about seeing history so clearly in front of you through that architecture that you just don’t get in the U.S. If I was asked to choose where I’d most like to live, I would always choose London.
- I am incredibly self-deprecating. It stems from self-doubt.
- What I like about fairy tales is that they highlight the emotions within a story. The situations aren’t real, with falling stars and pirates. But what you do relate to is the emotions that the characters feel.
- Of all the London theatres, the Donmar is the dream.
- Fame terrifies me. I can say that with honesty. You’re terrified that, when people know the real you, they won’t like you.
- I’m a London lad, but I’m fascinated by America. I want to take a motorcycling trip across the country and see those wide open spaces.
- Claire Danes is lovely and a really great actress.
- I love New York, but I have to admit that I feel very English, and I do miss that sense of history that you have everywhere in Britain.
- It’s so easy to become obsessed with the film industry and recognition that we can forget that we are not saving the world. We are just actors trying to entertain people.
- I left Britain in the mid-1990s when TV was going down the cundie – another good Dundee word – because I wanted a film career. But as I get older, I find myself being drawn back to my roots, and I’m loving it.
