Butch was raised in Viroqua with two siblings. The boy studied piano for six years, before becoming interested in drumming. Upon matriculation from high school, Vig enrolled to study the film industry at the University of Wisconsin, where he met Steve Marker. Vig helped to create songs for low budget films, including a song for the film “Slumber Party Massacre”. In Madison, Vig played in many garage bands, including Eclipse, before in 1978 forming Spooner alongside other members Jeff Walker, Dave Benton, Tappero Joel and Duke Erikson. Spooner was launched under their own label, Boat Records through which they published their recordings, including their debut EP “Cruel School” (1979). Vig’s net worth was well established.
In 1984, Vig and Marker launched Smart Studios in Madison, while continuing to play drums with Spooner at night, and work as a taxi driver by day. Then Vig formed a band called First Person, and another band called Fire Town, which quickly became famous and signed a contract with Atlantic Records; Atlantic hired producer Michael Frondelli to work with them. Despite the band failing shortly afterwards, Vig learned many techniques of production, and he then reformed Spooner for their last album before he decided to devote himself to full time production, although he continued his career as a drummer in the band Garbage. They released several successful singles in 1995 -1996, for example, “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains”. Garbage was awarded as the Best Emerging Band at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 1996. In 1999, they were nominated for two Grammy Awards for the Album of the Year and the Best Rock Album. In 2003 they band decided to split up, but in 2005 they reunited to record the fourth album “Bleed Like Me –t”. Then Garbage announced an indefinite break, emphasizing that they decided to do more for personal interest. The band has sold more than 17 million albums worldwide, which has significantly increased the net worth of Butch Vig as well as other members of the band.
Concerning his career as a producer, the first high profile production work was made in 1991, when Vig produced “Gish” of the Smashing Pumpkins and “Nevermind” of Nirvana. Vig also produced two albums for Sonic Youth, “Dirty” (1992) and “Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No. Star” (1994). Vig worked with Jimmy Eat World on the sixth album “Chase This Light” (2007). He produced the band The Subways with their second album “All or Nothing” (2008). He also worked with Tom Gabel, Shirley Manson and other celebrities.
