Harold Simon Belsky Wiki Biography

Harold Simon Belsky was born on the 5th February 1929, in Holyoke, Massachusetts USA, and is a drummer best known to the world as a session musician who has worked with such musicians as Elvis Presley, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beach Boys and Steely Dan, among many others.

Have you ever wondered how rich Hal Blaine is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Blaine’s net worth is as high as $5 million, earned through his successful career as a drummer, as during his career which began in the 1940s, he has played drums on more than 50 No. 1 hits, which have considerably increased his net worth.

Hal is the son of Meyer and Rose Belsky, Jewish Eastern European immigrants. Little is known about his early life and education, but on his way to becoming one of the most prolific drummers in the history of rock, Hal started playing drums on a professional level firstly in the late ‘40s, and several years later started playing drums for the Tommy Sands’ band, his teen idol. Little by little his name became more known, and he would play on such songs as “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” performed by Elvis Presley, and several other of his hits in the ‘60s, certainly a strong base for his net worth.

He then joined Phil Spector’s group called “Wrecking Crew”, and his Wall of Sound production, through which he played on numerous tracks in the next three decades, early on including the hits “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes, and “Da Doo Ron Ron” performed by the Crystals. Then he started working with the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the Mamas and the Papas, the Grass roots, Sonny and Cher, Jonny Rivers, Frank Sinatra, Herb Alpert, among many others, all of which helped increase his net worth by a large margin.

According to his own count, Hal has recorded over 35,000 songs in 25 years, including working on six albums that received Grammy Award for best album of the year, including “A Taste of Honey”, by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, “Strangers in the Night” (1967), by Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” in 1969 and “Bridge over Troubled Water” in 1971, among others. Thanks to his contribution to so many artists and their hits, which reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the pop music industry spanning the last 60 years, confirming his successful career in music is that Hal Blaine was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, then the Musician’s Hall of Fame and Museum, and in 2010 he became a member of the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

Regarding his personal life, little is known about Hal in the media, as he tends to keep his life away from music very private, although he is known to have a daughter, Michelle.

  • Profiled in the 1991 book “The Big Beat–Conversations with Rock’s Great Drummers”, edited by Max Weinberg.
  • Played with The Baja Marimba Band.
  • Father of Michelle Blaine.
  • Brian Wilson said Blaine was the best drummer he ever worked with.
  • The 1964 hit “Little Honda” by The Hondells was actually recorded by a group of studio musicians, including Glen Campbell on lead guitar and Blaine on drums. The group known as The Hondells was put together for touring purposes after the song became a hit, but they had nothing to do with the actual recording of the song itself.
  • Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 (under the category Side-Men).
  • Legendary session/studio drummer, used by music producer Phil Spector on virtually all of his famous Philles’ Records “Wall of Sound” productions. He was the drummer on such classics as The Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron”, “Uptown” and “He’s a Rebel”. Probably the biggest hit record he worked on was The Ronettes’ million-selling “Be My Baby” from 1963, with the famous “thump, thump, thump, BOOM!” drum line repeated twice at the very beginning of the song.
