Norah Jones Wiki Biography
Geetaly Norah Jones Shankar was born on 30 March 1979, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York City USA, of Indian (father) and American descent, and is a singer, songwriter, musician and actress far better known by the shorter form of her name – Norah Jones, the recording artist who took the world of music by storm with her 2002 solo debut album “Come Away with Me”. Consistently producing best-selling hits and albums, Norah Jones has been a name to watch ever since then. To date, Jones has produced five studio albums of her own, and also collaborated with various other singers and musicians – including greats like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, and even helped with famous American animator and director Seth MacFarlane’s debut album. With all these successes in mind, it comes as no surprise that Norah Jones’s net worth is as large as it is.
So just how rich is Norah Jones? Sources estimate that Norah has racked up a net worth of $25 million over the course of her relatively short career in the music indistry.
The elder daughter of world-renowned Indian musician Ravi Shankar and American concert producer Sue Jones, Norah Jones is a long-standing music enthusiast; Jones has credited many of the old jazz legends with inspiring her to pursue a career in the music industry. Jones had her first experiences with public singing in church, and she was tutored in singing and playing the piano as a child. Even then, Norah Jones was already drawing attention for her amazing voice and compositions, being awarded with two DownBeat Student Music Awards in 1996. Jones went on to study jazz piano in the University of North Texas, and it was there that she met one of her future colleagues, singer and songwriter Jesse Harris.
By 2001, Norah Jones had moved back to New York, where she was soon noticed by the jazz recording label “Blue Note Records”. “Blue Note” offered Norah a contract in spite of uncertainties over the direction her music was to take – and it proved a clever choice, as Norah Jones’s debut solo album “Come Away with Me” not only went on to top the US Billboard 200, but won Jones an astonishing five Grammy Awards, and has sold over 26 million copies across the world to date – a huge initial boost to Norah Jones’s net worth. Subsequent albums would prove equally successful, with the 2004 “Feels Like Home” reaching #1 in over sixteen countries across the world. Having released several chart-topping albums, Norah is the recipient of multiple Grammy Awards to date.
In addition, Jones debuted as an actress alongside Jude Law and Natalie Portman in the 2007 romantic drama “My Blueberry Nights”. Norah has so far appeared in more than a dozen films, mostly as herself, plus a number of documentaries and television series, which have contributed significantly to her net worth.
Recently touring several cities in India, and continuing to collaborate with a number of other musicians and singers, Norah Jones shows no sign of slowing down – and her net worth is sure to continue growing as her career goes on.
In her personal life, Norah Jones was in a long-term relationship with the bassist Lee Alexander from 2000 until 2007. In 2014 she gave birth to a son, but refuses to identify the father with whom she lives.

Norah Jones Quotes
- I’ve never wanted to portray some theatrical character or role. I’m just me, take it or leave it.
- [on being approached by director Kar-Wai Wong to star in My Blueberry Nights (2007)] I thought maybe he wanted some music for a movie, and he asked if I wanted to be in a movie. And I said, “Well, I don’t know if I can act — have you seen my music videos?” I’m pretty uncomfortable in front of the camera, and he said, “No, you’re natural, I like that”.
- With the first record I was very overwhelmed – a scared little chicken because I felt like people were staring at me and I didn’t have any clothes on or something. Now, people aren’t really staring at me, so I’m able to be more comfortable with myself.
- Recently I’ve started to drive again. Living in New York City you don’t really need a car, and I had let my license lapse. I’ve really found it liberating to drive again. I don’t think it is good for me to drive too much in New York City, though, because I am prone to road rage. Plus I drive like a granny and everyone in New York drives with impatience.
- [on her role in My Blueberry Nights (2007)] I was asked by [director] Kar-Wai Wong to be in his new film. It didn’t seem like I would be the most obvious person for him to ask, but for some reason he did, and for some reason I dove in head first before I knew anything about the project. I watched several of his films and thought they were beautiful, so I just trusted him.
- I don’t try to sound like anyone but me anymore. If something is out of my element, I try to avoid it.
- That’s been the coolest thing about all this – I get to meet people that I worship!
- Without a piano I don’t know how to stand, don’t know what to do with my hands.
- I’m not melancholy; I’m a happy-go-lucky person, kind of silly. I like funny things. I have a lot of energy. I tend to like music that’s mellow, though.
- [on the effects her success has had on her life] I just do the same stuff I always did. I have a bigger apartment–that’s the main change.
- [asked by Katie Couric how she felt after sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards] I felt like I went to somebody else’s birthday party and I ate all their cake without anybody else getting a piece.
- I don’t always know where to put my hands; sometimes it is endearing, sometimes not.
