So just how rich is Tino Martinez as of mid-2017? Authoritative sources report that Martinez’s net worth is as high as $30 million. His wealth is accumulated from his two decades long baseball career and his coaching job as well.
Martinez was raised in the neighborhood of West Tampa. Prior to his baseball career, Tino worked in his grandfather’s cigar factory. He attended St. Joseph School and later on Tampa Catholic High School. However, he didn’t finish the previously mentioned school and he transferred to Jefferson High School where he matriculated, and then enrolled into the University of Tampa, but left before graduating. His first notable performance on the baseball field was at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where the US team won the gold medal. Tino belted two homers and drove in four runs, helping his team achieve a 5-3 result in the final. Martinez was subsequently selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 1988 MLB Draft, and played for manager Lou Piniella.
Tino went on to have several mediocre seasons but had his big breakthrough in 1995 driving in 111 runs and hitting 31 home runs.
In the following season, Martinez was traded to the New York Yankees, signing a five year contract with them and playing in the position of starting first baseman. Sports experts agree that his performance added significantly to the team’s performance during the 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons of the World Series championships, however, the highlight of that era was the 1997 season in which he was ranked second in the American League in home runs and RBI, and second in AL Most Valuable Player voting, although Tino suffered an upper back injury when he was hit during a game. He went on to play for St. Louis Cardinals in just the 2002, then the Cardinals replaced him, and Martinez went on to play for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, in his hometown – besides playing, he was a mentor for younger players as well.
Having finished the 2004 season, Martinez went on to join the New York Yankees again. He achieved notable scores, including hitting 5 homeruns in 5 games, and although his performance was acknowledged, the team canceled their option for Tino and he eventually became a free agent, and just a few months later, decided to retire from playing.
In the upcoming period, he would begin his broadcasting career at ESPN. In addition, he became a special instructor for the Yankees in 2008, and commentator for the YES Network. In the more recent past, Tino became the hitting coach for the Miami Merlins.
In his personal life, Tino has been married to Marie Prado since 1991, and they have three children.
He eventually returned to college in 2011 and earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies.
Despite being retired, Martinez is still respected among the Yankee fans. He received the loudest ovations in the Yankees’ 2011 Old Timer’s Day. In the following years he was honored with a plaque in Monument Park, an open-air museum located in Yankee Stadium.
