Kenneth Howard Norton Jr. was born on 29 September 1966, in Jacksonville, Illinois USA, and is a professional American Football coach and retired professional football player, best known as the defensive coordinator for the National Football League (NFL) team the Oakland Raiders. Ken attended Westchester High School, and during his time there, played football mainly as a running back. After matriculating, he attended UCLA, playing for the school’s team from 1984 to 1987. He was changed to the linebacker position and would carry on that role for the rest of his playing career. He helped the Bruins get to four consecutive bowl game wins and was part of the 1985 conference championship team. In 1987, he earned All-American honors and was a finalist for the Butkus Award. Norton Jr. joined the 1988 NFL Draft and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys during the second round. He did not play much during his rookie season due to a broken thumb, but the following year he started playing as a weakside linebacker before becoming a full time starter in 1990. After an injury during that season, he bounced back and was moved to play as a middle linebacker, and would have his breakout season in 1992 when he started getting noticed for his defense. He helped the Cowboys win their first Super Bowl in the ‘90s, with the team becoming the first in the league for defense. The following year, he played through a torn bicep and helped the Cowboys win their second straight Super Bowl. He was also selected for his first Pro Bowl. Eventually, Ken would leave the team and enter the free agency after the institution of the salary cap.

Norton then signed with the San Francisco 49ers and during his time there became the first player to win three consecutive Super Bowls, as the 49ers won in his first season with them, making him the only player to have achieved the feat so far, so winning consecutive Super Bowls on different teams. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1995, and then retired from playing after 13 seasons.

After retiring, Ken first worked as a radio and television analyst. He also coached the football team of Hamilton High School. In 2004, he became part of the USC Trojan football team coaching staff, serving as a linebacker coach and recruiter. Five years later, he was promoted to Assistant Head Coach for Defense and has helped develop several Rose Bowl MVPs. In 2010, he moved to join the Seattle Seahawks, and would eventually help the team win Super Bowl XLVIII, his first win as a coach. In 2015, he then became the defensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.
