Teddy Gentry was raised in Lookout Mountain by his mother and his beloved grandfather in a timber frame home on a cotton farm. After matriculating from a local high school, Teddy Gentry did a variety of jobs including, as he said in one interview, running a theater, laying carpets, bagging groceries and working on a farm.
In 1969, Teddy Gentry teamed up with his cousins Randy Owen and Jeff Cook and formed the band named Wildcountry. They were circling the local clubs and bars for several years before in 1973 they decided to pursue music careers full time. Saying goodbye to their jobs and occasional weekend gigs, the band began a tour through South Carolina’s club scene. These engagements provided the basis for Teddy Gentry’s net worth.
Prior to 1977 when they expanded the crew and changed the name to Alabama, they had already begun performing their original songs. In the same year, after two self-released hit singles, the band was approached by the RCA Records and – the rest is history. They became the most decorated band in the history of country music with over 150 million album copies sold. All these ventures have certainly positively impacted Teddy Gentry’s overall wealth.
The real breakthrough in the band’s career came in the early 1980s, when its 27 songs were ranked No.1 on several charts across the states. Singles such as “Tennessee River”, “Love in the First Degree” and “Mountain Music” marked just the beginning of the successful streak. Alabama continued to release hit singles with Teddy Gentry as the songwriter, as well as to add more and more awards to its portfolio. To this day, Alabama is the most honored and awarded band in the history of country music with more than 200 awards including 15 Academy of Country Music, 18 American Music as well as two prestigious Grammy Awards. It is certain that all these accomplishments have helped Teddy Gentry to build a successful music career and to dramatically increase his overall net worth.
To this day, Alabama has released 24 studio albums of which 21 are rated platinum. The majority of the band’s No.1 hit singles were written by Teddy Gentry. In 2005, Teddy Gentry alongside his bandmates was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Undoubtedly all these achievements, besides popularity, have brought quite a decent sum to the overall wealth of Teddy Gentry.
When it comes to his personal life, Teddy Gentry has been married to Linda for over 33 years and they have two children. They are still based in Fort Payne, Alabama.
