To begin with, he was raised in Unionville, and educated in Central Park School; later, he joined St. Brother Andre Catholic High School. Steven played his first game in the NHL in Prague, Czech Republic, at the beginning of the season 2008 – 2009. He had to wait until the 8th game to score his first point. In February 2009, Stamkos scored his first hat trick in the NHL, against the Chicago Blackhawks, the youngest of the franchise to do so. Despite yhis, Stamkos was severely criticized for the lack of contribution in terms of teamwork and assists during the first half of the season, during which he was sometimes limited to less than 10 minutes per game ice, but finished the season with 19 points in 20 games. Before the 2009 – 2010 season, Stamkos spent the summer practicing with Gary Roberts, the former NHL player, working on strength and endurance. This was the season during which he stood out in quality, and found himself competing for the title of top scorer in the league, finishing the season with 51 goals.

Following a start of the 2010 – 2011 season, during which scored 19 goals in the first 19 games, Stamkos attracted media attention for the challenge to the primacy of 50 goals in 50 games. In 2011, Stamkos was nominated to play in the NHL All-Star Game; because the Lightning ended the season in 5th place in the Eastern Conference, Stamkos made his debut in the playoffs of the Stanley Cup in 2011.
