Steven Avery, born on the 9th July 1962 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin USA, is a repeated convicted felon, who is now serving a sentence of life imprisonment at Waupun Correctional Institution, for murdering photographer Teresa Halbach. Before that, he spent 18 years in jail after being wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder back in 1985.

Born to Allan Avery, and his wife Dolores, he grew up with his older brother Chuck, younger Earl, and sister Barbara. He spent his days at a salvage yard owned and operated by the family. Once he was up for school, he underwent an IQ test which showed his intelligence quotient was 70, and as a result, he attended an elementary school for slower kids.

His earliest troubles with the law trace back to 1981, when he was convicted of burglarizing a bar with a friend, for which he was sentenced to ten months in prison. This was only the beginning, as in late 1982 he was jailed six months for animal cruelty, after throwing his cat onto a bonfire, but in 1985, he was sentenced to six years for endangering safety with evincing a depraved mind, and possession of firearm charges; he had attacked his first cousin and held a gun to her head, among other threats.

Later the same year, he was charged with brutally sexually attacking Penny Beerntsen while she was jogging on a Lake Michigan beach. Though Avery was miles away and with an alibi, he was charged, and the victim called him out, firstly during a photo lineup, and later from a live line-up, and he was sentenced to 32 years in prison. Wrongfully convicted, in 1995 there was a call to Manitowoc County Jail from a Brown County police detective who said that someone had turned-up talking about the assault which had happened years ago in Manitowoc County, and that the police had the wrong guy. Sheriff Kocourek, who was the sheriff at the time stated back, “We already have the right guy. Don’t concern yourself with it.”

Avery spent 18 years in prison before being released from prison in 2003, thanks to DNA testing which identified the real attacker – Gregory Allen, who resembled Steven. Two years after being exonerated, Steven filed a lawsuit against Manitowoc County and Thomas Kocourek, the sheriff at the time, claiming $36 million. The suit was settled in 2006, and Steven received $400,000 in compensation, which significantly increased his net worth.

However, in late 2005 he was again arrested, this time for kidnapping, murder, sexual assault and mutilation of a corpse. He set up a meeting with Teresa Halbach, a photographer, and she visited his home; her body was subsequently found near his property. After his trial, Steven was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, and is currently serving his sentence at Waupun Correctional Institution. His nephew, Brendan Dassey was also convicted of murder as Steven’s accomplice.
