Steve Davis Wiki Biography

Steve Davis was born on 22 August 1957, in Plumstead, London, England, and a former professional snooker player, best known as a six-time World Champion.

So just how wealthy is Steve Davis? Sources state that Davis has acquired a wealth of over $10 million, as of early 2017, accumulated largely during his career in snooker from 1978-2014. His involvement in showbiz and his numerous books have also contributed to his fortune.

Davis was taught to play snooker by his father when he was 12 years old. At 18 he started to compete around the country, winning the English Under-19 Billiards Championship in 1976. Two years later he won the Pontin’s Spring Open, defending his title the following year. He went on to make his World Championship debut in 1979.

In 1980 Davis won his first UK Championship, and the following year saw him winning the Classic, the International Masters and English Professional Championship, and then the World Championship title; this triumph boosted his popularity and considerably elevated his net worth.

He went on to participate in a number of tournaments, winning the International Open and retaining his UK title in 1981, and then compiling the first televised maximum break at the Classic, and winning his first Masters tournament in 1982. After losing both his UK and his world title that year, he went on to regain the world title in 1983, and the UK title a year later. He also won his third World Champion in 1984. His net worth grew significantly.

Davis’ participation in the 1985 World Championship final with Dennis Taylor became remembered for the black-ball conclusion which was voted the ninth greatest sporting moment ever. The event gathered a record 18.5 million viewers. Although he failed to take the world title, Davis won the Grand Prix and UK Championship that year.

After winning the UK Championship again in 1986, he regained his world title in the following year. In addition, he won the Classics, the UK Championship and the International open, and the same four wins followed in 1988. All contributed to Davis’ fame and fortune.

He captured his last world title in 1989, competing in the heaviest victory in a world final, in which his performance was considered his best one ever. He finished the year with additional victories in the International Open, Grand Prix and UK Championship, reinforcing his status of one of the greatest players of all time and further expanding his wealth.

During the next decade, his statistics fell off, and he was replaced as world number one by Stephen Hendry. He continued to play at a high level until his retirement in 2014, but scoring his last major title in 1997 when he won the Masters.

Over the course of his celebrated career, Davis has won a record 81 professional titles, of which 28 were ranking events, including six world titles, six UK titles and three Masters, earning over $10 million in prize money. He was ranked world number one for seven seasons in a row during the ’80s, which enabled him to reach stardom and to amass a significant net worth. It has also brought him many awards and honors, the highest being an MBE and OBE from the Queen.

Aside from snooker, Davis has also played professional pool and poker, and amateur chess, gaining impressive results. He has worked as a DJ of electronic music on local radio station Phoenix FM, and later began performing in London’s clubs. Davis has also published many books on snooker and chess, as well as several cookbooks, enhancing his wealth.

On television, he has appeared as a commentator for the BBC snooker coverage. He has been featured in several quizzes and ads, and has made guest appearances in series like “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret” and “The Morecambe & Wise Show”.

In his personal life, Davis was married to Judith Greig from 1980 to 1995. They have two children together.

Steve is involved in charity, serving as a Patron Celebrity Supporter of Orchid Cancer Appeal.
