Stephen Lawrence Winwood Wiki Biography
Born Stephen Lawrence Winwood on the 12th May 1948, in Handsworth, Birmingham England, he is a renowned musician, best known for his hit singles “While You See A Chance”, “Back In The High Life Again”, “Higher Love”, and “Roll With It”, among others. Also, Steve has been a part of numerous rock, blues-rock and jazz bands, including The Stephen Davis Group, Blind Faith and Go, among numerous collaborations with Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Billy Joel and others. His career has been active since the 1960s.
Have you ever wondered how rich Steve Winwood is, as of mid- 2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Steve Winwood`s net worth is as high as $60 million, earned through his successful career in the music industry, as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard player.
Steve and his family moved to Great Barr while he was still a child; his first interest towards music came out when he was eight years old, as he began playing drums, guitar and then piano. Along with his brother Muff and father, he became a part of The Ron Atkinson Band, and was also in the choir of the St. John`s Church Of England.
Steve went to the Great Barr School, and then to Birmingham and Midland Institute of Music, however, he didn`t complete his education.Instead, his music career began when he joined The Stephen Davis Band in 1963, and stayed there for four years during which he came to the fore singing on “Gimme Some Lovin’”, then he decided to leave and start his own band called Traffic, with Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. They released eight studio albums, some of which achieved gold and platinum status, including “John Barleycorn Must Die” (1970), “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” (1971), “Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory” (1973), and “When The Eagles Flies” (1974). After 1974 the band broke up, and reformed in 1994 to release their last studio album, entitled “Far From Home”.
Steve is also known for his solo career; so far he has released nine studio albums, the first self-titled in 1977 which reached No. 12 on the UK charts. His second album was released three years later, entitled “Arc of a Diver”, and it achieved platinum status in the USA and Canada, and silver in Britain. Steve continued successfully through the 1980s, and with albums “Talking Back To The Night” (1982), “Back In The High Life” (1986), “Roll With It” (1988), which topped the Billboard 200 chart, only increased his net worth, since the album achieved triple platinum status in the USA. In 1990, he had his last commercially successful album, called “Refugees of the Heart”, which achieved gold status, and since then, his albums haven`t received much public attention, but still received positive critiques from popular music magazines.
Steve`s next album came out in 1997 “Junction Street”, and it reached No. 32 on the UK charts, and No. 123 on the Billboard 200. In 2003 his eighth studio album was released – “About Time”, and in 2009 came his last studio album “Nine Lives”, which was an improvement on previous ones, as it reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Most recently, Steve has collaborated with one of the legends of rock, Eric Clapton on an album called “Old Sock”, which was released in 2013.
Regarding his personal life, Steve has been married to Eugenia Crafton since 1987; the couple has four children, and resides in a 300-year old manor house in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire England. Previously, he was married to Nicole Weir from 1978 until 1986.

Stephen Lawrence Winwood Quotes
- I smoked far too much dope and wasted a lot of my life.
- I went straight from Boy Scouts to rock ‘n’ roll. Fancy that!
- I really love Americans and American musical roots. It could be my British need for discipline that makes me admire the American appetite for freedom and passion.
Stephen Lawrence Winwood Important Facts
- Father-in-law of Ben Elliot, son of Annabel Elliot, sister of Camilla Parker-Bowles.
- Is the youngest member of Traffic.
- Eric Clapton had considered asking Winwood to join Cream to help act as a buffer between Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, who didn’t particularly care for each other. Unfortunately, the group broke up before Winwood could accept the offer. By an ironic stroke of luck, Winwood, Clapton, and Baker later teamed up together (along with Rick Grech) in Blind Faith.
- Hotly tipped to become the dance track of 2004, Eric Prydz’s “Call On Me” was originally a 1980s smash hit for Winwood called “Valerie”. When he heard the remix he thought it was so good he not only gave his permission to use the samples, he even re-recorded his vocals especially for the track.
- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Traffic, in March 2004.
- Suffered a severe bout of peritonitis that nearly killed him in the early 1970s.
- When Crosby Stills & Nash were looking for another musician to help them beef up their sound in concert, they asked Winwood if he would be interested in joining. Winwood declined due to the fact that he was already committed to his current band Blind Faith with Eric Clapton. Ironically, Clapton was also asked to join C.S.N..
- Founding member of the critically and commercially acclaimed band Traffic.
- The Spencer Davis Group recorded the intriguingly titled “Today Gluggo Tomorrow the World” written by Lynsey de Paul and Pete York.
- Had U.S. and U.K. solo hits with “Higher Love”, “Valerie”, “While You See a Chance” and “Back in the High Life Again”.
- Brother of Muff Winwood.
- Member of the 1960s rock band Spencer Davis Group.
