How much is the net worth of Sonia Sotomayor? It has been reported by authoritative sources that the overall size of her wealth is as much as $4 million, as of the data presented in the middle of 2017. Judicial work is the major source of Sotomayor’s fortune.

To begin with, she was raised in the southern part of the county, a short distance from Yankee Stadium. Her father died when she was only eight years old, and her mother, Celina Sotomayor raised her with her younger brother, Juan. Sotomayor was educated at Cardinal Spellman High School, a Catholic school in the Bronx, and then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1976, with Summa Cum Laude honours. She subsequently obtained a Juris Doctorate degree from Yale University Law School. Sotomayor claimed to be inspired by Nancy Drew’s detective books, but when she was diagnosed with diabetes, doctors suggested a different career to that of detective.

Concerning her professional career, Sotomayor was Assistant District Attorney in New York County, prosecuting cases of robbery, homicide, police brutality and child pornography. In 1984, she became a partner of the litigation firm Pavia & Harcourt, in which she specialized in intellectual property matters. As of November 1991, she was nominated by the President George H. W. Bush to the office in the Southern District Court of New York, becoming the youngest judge in the district and the first Hispanic federal judge in the entire state of New York. On the 26th May 2009, President Barack Obama nominated her for the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and the Senate confirmed her nomination by 68 votes to 31 against. All Democrats and two independents voted for confirmation, with the exception of Senator Edward Kennedy, who could not vote.

Moreover, Sotomayor is also known as the writer. She has written a book with her memoirs “My Beloved World” (2013) as a testimony of her social and professional life. She received an advance of $1.2 million for it, which increased the outright size of Sonia’s net worth. The same was published simultaneously in English and Spanish in 2013, with the English version part of the selection of the New York Times Best of 2013.

Furthermore, she was rewarded with honorary law degrees from a number of universities, including Lehman College (1999), Northeastern University School of Law (2007), New York University (2012), the University of Puerto Rico (2014) among others.

Finally, in the personal life of Sonia Sotomayor, she married Kevin Noonan in 1976, but the two divorced in 1983, since when she has apparently been single.

Sonia Sotomayor Quotes

  • Sometimes, idealistic people are put off the whole business of networking as something tainted by flattery and the pursuit of selfish advantage. But virtue in obscurity is rewarded only in heaven. To succeed in this world you have to be known to people.
  • In the world I grew up in, if you were poor and had a bunch of kids in the house – which everybody did – nothing you bought was ever going to stay pure, and the only way to do it was to put plastic on [the couch] to protect it.
  • [on why she wrote ‘My Beloved World’, her autobiography] I realized that people had an unreal image of me, that somehow I was a god on Mount Olympus. I decided that if I were going to make use of my role as a Supreme Court Justice, it would be to inspire people to realize that, first, I was just like them and second, if I could do it, so could they.
  • When I’m concentrating, I can be fixed in place for hours. In fact, there was a joke in my office that everybody would come and chat outside my door because they knew – no matter how loud they talked – if I was concentrating, it would not disturb me at all.
  • I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.
