Sofia Villani Scicolone Wiki Biography

Sofia Villani Scicolone was born on 20 September 1934, in Rome, Italy. She is an actress perhaps best known for her appearances in films such as “The Pride and the Passion” and “It Started in Naples”. One of her most notable films was “Two Women”, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She’s also won multiple awards aside from that, and all of her efforts have helped in raising her net worth.

How rich is Sophia Loren? As of early-2016, sources inform of a net worth that is at $75 million, mostly earned through a successful career in acting. She’s acted in numerous films throughout her life, and has worked with other big names in Hollywood, earning her recognition not only in Italy but worldwide as well. She’s written an autobiography which has somewhat helped with her wealth.

Loren was born into unusual circumstances, with a father from nobility who refused to marry her mother, who was an aspiring actress. During World War II, Sophia was hit by shrapnel which led to the family moving to Naples for a while. They returned after the war to open a pub where she waited tables and washed the dishes. Her career would begin at the age of 14, when she entered Miss Italia 1950, a beauty pageant. She didn’t win, but became one of the finalists, and later tried her hand at acting classes. She appeared in minor roles first before starring in the 1953 film “Aida”, which got her noticed. This continued with films including “Two Nights with Cleopatra” and “The Gold of Naples”.

In 1958, Paramount Pictures would offer Loren a five-picture contract which would earn her international recognition. She starred in “Desire Under the Elms, “Houseboat”, and “Heller in Pink Tights”. In 1961, she was cast in “Two Women”, and her performance earned her a Cannes Film Festival best performance award and also an Academy Award for Best Actress. She won over 22 awards for her portrayal, and became one of the top actresses in the world at that time, increasing her net worth further.

She continued to make films, at this point moving between the United States and Europe to shoot. A few of the films she made were “El Cid” with Charlton Heston, “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”, and “A Countess from Hong Kong” with Marlon Brando. After she had children, Loren lessened her time in films, and would focus more on roles in Italy. A few of the films she had during this period were “Brief Encounter”, “The Cassandra Crossing” and “A Special Day”, which was nominated for almost a dozen awards, increasing Sophia’s collection. She starred in “Brass Target” in 1978 in which she won another Golden Globe, and later her biography entitled “Sophia Loren: Living and Loving, Her Own Story” was published. Into the ’80s and ’90s, she continued to work and was eventually declared a “cinema treasure”. One of her latest films is “Nine” in 2009, which also stars Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Day-Lewis.

For her personal life, it is known that she married Carlo Ponti, Sr., in 1957 with a very large age gap. Carlo was married previously and had to have it annulled to avoid charges, so the two remarried in 1966. They had two children, and they remained married until his death in 2007. Loren also had an affair with Cary Grant whom she met while filming “Houseboat” in 1957. The affair ended on a bad note, and Loren decided to marry Carlo soon after. Other than that, Sophia is a Roman Catholic and stays mostly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Sofia Villani Scicolone Quotes

  • Oh, how I loved the movies as a little girl. Particularly I loved Yvonne De Carlo – she was my favorite. Others, too, like Rita Hayworth, but I used to dream that I was Yvonne De Carlo. And I liked that little one – what was her name? – June Allyson, too. But for me there was only one Yvonne De Carlo.
  • [on meeting Madonna at the premiere of Ready to Wear (1994)] I only met her once, at a premiere. I was waiting outside with a group of people, surrounded by photographers, and she was walking towards us. I said, “Madonna, come here,” because she looked so alone, and we were photographed together. She was charming and very respectful to me, but you know, she looked very lonely.
  • [to Barbara Walters in 2000] I am not Italian, I am a Neapolitan!
  • [2014, on a famous 1957 photo of her stink-eyeing Jayne Mansfield’s cleavage] Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face, you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow–BOOM!–and spill all over the table.
  • [her advice to young actresses] Learn how to kiss. Now they kiss like they are devouring each other. They should see how people like Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant kiss. Do they eat each other’s faces? No.
  • [on Demi Moore] She dares, and I like a person who dares.
  • [on having made the drama film Two Women (1960)] I said before I am not a sexy pot. Now I can prove it.
  • [on why she, a nominee, could not attend the 1961 Academy Awards] I decided that I could not bear the ordeal of sitting in plain view of millions of viewers while my fate was being judged. If I lost, I might faint for disappointment. If I won, I would also very likely faint with joy. I decided it would be better to faint at home.
  • There IS a Fountain of Youth: It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.
  • I hated my father all my life but in his final days I forgave him for all the suffering he caused us. As you grow older, marry, and have children of you own, you learn and forget. I do not forget easily, but I do forgive.
  • I’ve never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don’t understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now.
  • The facts of life are that a child who has seen war cannot be compared with a child who doesn’t know what war is except from television.
  • I am lucky. I had a very beautiful mother.
  • Sharon Stone talks about sex as if it were a bowl of spaghetti or a pizza. Those things are private, you need to have a little discretion.
  • Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.
  • Hate is unfulfilled love.
  • [on Gina Lollobrigida] Gina’s personality is limited. She is good playing a peasant but is incapable of playing a lady. That said, I don’t think she’s positively mad about me. Because I’m bigger than she? It’s possible. Who knows?
  • [on Cary Grant] I learned many things working with Cary Grant. He has such tremendous concentration. Many actors do not have the courage to stand still. Cary Grant knows how to concentrate, how to look directly at you, but always with great relaxation.
  • [on Gregory Peck] One of the most charming men I’ve ever met.
  • [on Marcello Mastroianni] Marcello is a man who thinks like a man, talks like a man — is a man! He has so much magnetism, he brings out the very soul in a woman.
  • [on Tyrone Power] Tyrone Power was my ideal man.
  • Many people think they want things, but they don’t really have the strength, the discipline. They are weak. I believe that you get what you want if you want it badly enough.
  • A mother has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.
  • A woman’s dress should be like a barbed wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view.
  • Cooking is an act of love, a gift, a way of sharing with others the little secrets — “piccoli segreti” — that are simmering on the burners.
  • [on why she did not pose nude in the 2007 Pirelli calendar] When Sophia Loren is naked, that is a lot of nakedness.
  • [on adultery] It’s a game I never play.
  • Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent.
