Sidney Blumenthal is a son of Claire and Hyman V. Blumenthal, and grew up in a Jewish family in Illinois. After earning a BA degree in sociology from Brandeis University in 1969, Sidney got his first job as a journalist, writing for weekly-issued publications such as The Boston Phoenix and The Real Paper.

He published a book entitled “Permanent Campaign” in 1980, while in 1983, Blumenthal started working as a national political correspondent for The New Republic, with his first major job coverage of the 1984 presidential campaign. Sidney later moved to The Washington Post for a few years, but then returned to The New Republic, before in 1993 joining The New Yorker as their Washington correspondent.

In the summer of 1997, Blumenthal joined the Bill Clinton Presidential administration and served as assistant and senior advisor to Clinton until 2001, advising the President on communications and public policy.
