Sid Vicious Wiki Biography

Born John Simon Ritchie on the 10th May 1957 in Lewisham, London, England, he was best known to the world as punk legend Sid Vicious, and will be remembered as bassist and vocalist of the famous punk rock band Sex Pistols. His career started in the mid- 70s, and ended with his premature death in 1979.

Have you ever wondered how rich Sid Vicious was at the time of his death? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Vicious’ net worth is as high as $400,000, an amount earned through his career as a musician.

Sid was the son of John and Anne Ritchie. His father was a guardsman at Buckingham Palace, and also played trombone but without major success. Soon after Sid was born, he and his mother moved to Ibiza, with his father soon joining them, however, he neglected his family and Anne then married Christopher Beverley. Unfortunately, Christopher was struck by cancer and soon died, in 1965, and as a result Sid and his mother had to rent a smaller apartment. Sid went to Sandown Court School, and then in 1971 he and his mother moved to Hackney, in east London, and after high school, Sid enrolled at Hackney Technical College, where he met John Lydon, with whom he would later play in the Sex Pistols. The two became quite close friends, and John even gave him the nickname Sid Vicious, after Sid was bitten by John’s pet hamster, which was named Sid.

Sid was slowly introduced to the music scene of London, firstly as a tambourine player on the streets with Lydon, playing Alice Cooper covers for money. Then in 1976 he joined Flowers of Romance, a punk band, on saxophone and as a singer, with Keith Levene among other members, and played drums for Siouxsie and the Banshees. Furthermore, he was considered as the new singer for the band Damned, however, he didn’t show at audition, and Dave Vanian was selected as the singer. He angry confronted Dave, stating that he hid information about the upcoming audition from him, and even confronted Dave at one of the Damned’s live shows, throwing glass at Dave, but he missed and instead, hit the pillar which caused glass to break and deflect, hitting a girl in the crowd, blinding her in one eye. As a result, Sid was arrested the next day and spent some time at Ashford Remand Centre, a prison for male juveniles.

In 1977 Sid joined punk rock band the Sex Pistols, following the leaving of Glen Matlock. However, he didn’t contribute much to the band, due to his drug abuse and consequent hospitalization. Nevertheless, he is credited as a bass player on their debut album “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” in 1977. While a part of the Sex Pistols, he met Nancy Spungen, and the two became a couple; their relationship lasted until her death in 1978, when she was allegedly stabbed in abdomen by Sid, apparently, as he was charged for her murder. He then attempted to kill himself several times, but was stopped every time. He continued with drug overdose, but managed to recover and was clean several months prior to his death.

Unfortunately, on the 1st February 1979, Sid gathered with friends, including Jerry Only, bassist of the Misfits, and Howie Pyro, also a bassist, to celebrate his release from prison. The night was fatal for Sid, as he was found dead by his mother the next morning, who had allegedly supplied him with drugs over the years.

Following his death, Sid became a legend immediately; although his contribution to music wasn’t on a high level, he was glorified by some for his attitude on the stage and life on the whole. There are several posthumous releases of Sid’s recordings, including “Sid Sings” (1979), “Better” (2001), “Sid Lives” (2007), and “Chaos and Disorder Tapes”, released in 2008.

Last couple of years of his life and relationship with Nancy Spungen were portrayed in the biopic “Sid and Nancy” in 1986, starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb playing the titular characters..

Sid Vicious Quotes

  • [towards the end of the Sex Pistols career] “In the end I was the only one with any anarchy left in me.”
  • [Talking about joining the Sex Pistols] I was getting my own group together; “The Flowers of Romance”, and John (Lydon) said to me – there was this big hoo-haa, and Malcolm was saying “it’s all a big secret man, you know. Come down to this pub at such-and-such”, and I thought they were gonna do me over cos I didn’t turn up to one of Rotten’s parties or something – he gets touchy over things like that. And they said “do you wanna play bass for The Sex Pistols?”
  • When there are no more categorizations; when there are no more “niggers”, when there are no more “whites”, when there’s just “people”, you know, when there’s no more “punks” when there’s no more “dirt”, that is when everything is gonna be OK.
  • On John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten: “John’s just jealous because I’m the brains of the group. I’ve written all the songs, even from the beginning when I wasn’t in the group.”
  • On what EMI thought the Sex Pistols were: “We weren’t the nice boys they thought we were. And, we weren’t nice boys, we were fuckin’ nasty little bastards… and we still are.
  • I got this feeling I’m gonna die before I get old. I don’t know why. I just have this feeling.
  • On drugs: “I don’t want to be a junkie for the rest of my life. I don’t want to be a junkie at all.”

Sid Vicious Important Facts

  • Vicious’ mum Anne Beverley committed suicide in 1996.
  • Is portrayed by Gary Oldman in Sid and Nancy (1986)
  • His $50,000 bail from the second degree murder charge was revoked when he was arrested for hitting Patti Smith’s brother, Todd, with a beer mug one night at a New York club.
  • His ashes were scattered on Nancy Spungen’s grave by his mother, Ann. Eileen Polk said that Spungen’s family would not allow Sid to be buried next to her, despite his request, nor would the Jewish cemetery permit scattering the ashes there. They were escorted through the cemetery and Ann later returned to scatter the ashes in secret.
  • Invented the “pogo” dance. Vicious went to a Sex Pistols gig before he joined the band and wanted to get a better look at them so he would jump up and down in a frenzy, and soon it caught on and more and more people did it.
  • During the famed summer 1976 “Punk Festival” at London’s 100 Club, Vicious became involved in a brawl with another punk, and tossed a beer mug at him. The mug missed, shattered against a pillar, and put a girl’s eye out. Vicious was charged, convicted and fined for the incident.
  • Was a member of the “Bromley Contingent,” a group of young punk fans who followed the Pistols and other punk bands around England.
  • Gained the emnity of the Clash’s Mick Jones due to his habit of wearing a Nazi Swastika t-shirt. Jones, who is Jewish, and the rest of the Clash vowed they would never appear on stage with the Sex Pistols.
  • He was allegedly stunningly musically incompetent, even by punk standards. His bass work was so rudimentary, that it’s rumored (and all the members of the band corroborate) that original Sex Pistol bassist Glen Matlock was invited to return to record basslines over Vicious’ originals, even though he had left the band under extremely acrimonious circumstances.
  • During the filming of Alex Cox’s “Sid and Nancy”, Sid’s mother gave the actor who played Sid (a relative unknown named Gary Oldman) Sid’s famous padlock necklace.
  • There was no key for his padlock chain necklace.
  • His stage name was given to him as a joke, because of his inability to defend himself in a fight. John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) once commented, “Sid couldn’t punch his way out of a bag of crisps!”
  • Former bassist for the pioneering punk band The Sex Pistols.
  • Boyfriend of Nancy Spungen.
  • For a short time Sid played drums for Siouxie and the Banshees in the 1970’s.
  • Suspected of killing his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, in 1978. Trial for the murder began January 2, 1979. Sid died before the trial ended. There was speculation that the killing was done by a drug dealer that frequented their apartment.
  • On 2 February 1980, in honor of the first anniversary of Sid’s death, one thousand punks marched from London’s Sloane Square in Chelsea to Hyde Park. His Mother, Anne Beverly, was supposed to have taken part in the proceedings, but she was in the hospital due to a drug overdose.
