So just how rich is Sean Avery? According to sources in early 2017, Avery has established a net worth of over $7.5 million, acquired largely during his hockey career, as well as through his business ventures including his involvement in the world of fashion and showbiz.

Avery grew up in Pickering, Ontario, where he attended Dunbarton High School. His hockey career started with the Ontario Hockey League, until in 1999 the Detroit Red Wings signed him as a free agent. The following year he turned pro, with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League. In 2001 Avery entered the NHL, being signed to the Detroit Red Wings, which won the Stanley Cup. Although he didn’t get into the playoffs, he gained needed experience with a championship team.

The next season he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, achieving impressive results with goals, assists and penalty minutes. During his tenure with the Kings, he also briefly played in the Finnish Elite League for the Lahti Pelicans, and in the United Hockey League for the Motor City Mechanics, becoming the first player in Mechanics’ history to score two hat tricks in a single season. After being suspended by the team for refusing to do a drill in practice in the 2005-06 season, the team soon re-signed him for one more year. His net worth began to grow.

In 2007 Avery was traded to the New York Rangers, helping the team to make it to the playoffs. Shortly afterwards, he received an arbitration award of $1.9 million as a restricted free agent. The following year he captured a goal in the first 10 seconds of a game, setting the record for fastest goal scored by a Ranger on home ice. His popularity was certainly boosted.

Later that year he signed a four-year, $15.5 million contract with the Dallas Stars. However, after being suspended by the team for controversial remarks he made about fellow players, the Stars waived Avery in 2009.

Shortly afterwards, the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, signed the player, but a few days later he was claimed by the Rangers, and he went on to spend the next three years switching time between the Rangers and their affiliate, the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. In 2012 Avery retired from professional hockey, having achieved worldwide fame and a significant fortune.

He soon took a job at an advertising and creative agency called Lipman in New York City, becoming chief strategic officer handling various strategies for numerous clients for both Lipman and its parent company, Revolate Holdings.

The former player has been involved in other businesses as well, such as Twtmob, based on connecting users with advertisers and campaigns. He was once a restaurateur, owning two restaurants, which he sold out of in 2013.
