Samuel Jon Hornish Jr. was born on the 2nd July 1979, in Defiance, Ohio USA, and is a car racing driver who is active for Penske Racing in NASCAR. Prior to that, he drove for Penske in the Indy Racing League, where he won the championship in 2001, 2002 and 2006. In 2006, he also won the Indianapolis 500.

To begin with, Hornish Jr. started competing at the age of 11 in kart racing. In addition, he drove the 24 Hours of Daytona for Intersport Racing.

His first year in the Indy Racing League, he drove for the PDM team and reached 3rd overall place. The following year, he went for Panther and became an IRL champion; Penske joined the IRL in 2002, but Horny was able to beat their best driver Hélio Castroneves and become the champion. However, in 2004 he joined Penske, and was able to win the first season race, but over the course of the season the Honda engines proved to be superior to the Toyota engine used by Penske. In 2005, he came 3rd overall behind two drivers from Andretti Green Racing. In the middle of 2006, after winning the pole position, he also won the Indianapolis 500 race.

At the end of 2006, Hornish announced that he would try to drive the last two races of the NASCAR Busch Series of 2006 season for Penske Racing, as well as individual races in the 2007 season. In his first two starts in 2006, he drove a Mobil 1- sponsored Dodge, but was involved in accidents in both races. In 2007, he participated in seven races of the Busch Series, with his best placement a 15th place on the Atlanta Motor Speedway. In the 2008 season, he drove the Dodge with Mobil 1 as a sponsor for Penske. At his first Daytona 500, Hornish landed in 15th place, while his team mates Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch finished 1st and 2nd. Also in the season 2009, he was active for Penske in the Sprint Cup. Hornish had his best season in 2013, finishing 2nd in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. His last win was accomplished in the American Ethanol E15 250 in 2016, yet he ended the season in 32nd position.
