He also served in the US House of Representatives for the 2nd congressional district, and in the Senate. As he continues his endeavors, it is expected that his wealth will also continue to increase.

He attended Kansas State University, and became the student body president there. Brownback worked as an attorney, and in 1986 became the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture. Four years later, he was accepted into the White House Fellow program which led him to the Office of the US Trade Representative, becoming the Secretary of Agriculture until 1993. The following year, he was elected to the US House of Representatives and would stay there for three years before winning the special election for the US Senate, defeating Sheila Frahm.

Sam would go on to win two more general elections to the Senate, and was a member of several committees, including the Judiciary Committee, Joint Economic Committee, and the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. He led the effort to enact the Trafficking Victims Protection Act in 2000 alongside Congressman Chris Smith, allowing stronger enforcement against trafficking cases.
