During 1987 he won Watkins Glen and Riverside championships, and in the following year he scored six wins, finishing second in the championship to Bill Elliott by 24 points.
Furthermore, in 1989 Rusty won the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship, and in 1991 he was an IROC champion. However, his best season was 1993, when he won the 1993 Food City 500 at Bristol Speedway, at the same time as his friend Alan Kulwicki died in a plane accident, so he dedicated the victory to him by doing Kulwicki’s trademark reverse “Polish Victory Lap”. The season he ended in the top three, contributing further to his net worth.
